Athletics
Bladensburg
High School Athletic Department Philosophy
The athletic program of this school reflects the commitment in the PGCPS
Goals of Education that each school will work towards ensuring that all
students "make the best of both physical talents and limitations."
The success of our athletic teams is a direct result of the following:
dedication of our coaches; continuing cooperation between members of the
Athletic Department and the Administration; the superb support provided
by the Booster Club, parents and members of the community; and the dedication,
skill, and participation of our athletes.
Athletics is herein considered to be an integral part of the total educational
process. Athlete-scholars need to be reminded of the roles played both
by athletics and by the academic education they receive in building the
foundation of their future success. It is considered of prime importance
that coaches monitor their athletes' progress in the academic environment,
not only during the sport season but throughout the school year.
Interscholastic sports are a "tool" which can be used to teach
and practice good citizenship. To this end, we believe winning and losing
are important only when considered in the context of how we play the game
and how we represent ourselves and our school under the pressure of competition.
Therefore, we believe:
THAT interscholastic athletics
is an integral part of the educational program of Bladensburg High School.
Participation on a team will promote desirable attitudes toward the importance
of team work and team unity, will promote social growth and maturation
of all individuals involved and will prepare participants for the responsibilities
of adult life.
THAT every student should
have an opportunity to become involved in the athletic program; if not
as an athlete, then in other capacities such as manager, statistician,
or video recorder.
THAT the coaches and participants
should strive at all levels to develop and display the attitudes of good
sportsmanship, good citizenship and loyalty to teams and school.
THAT the health and well
-being of the participants are more important than the outcome of any
athletic contest.
