Mustang Mediators meeting at UMCP

Ten Mustang Mediators and Dr. Barkley-Birckhead, the peer mediation teacher, were picked up by the University of Maryland football team bus on April 29, 2008.They rode to the University of Maryland to attend a pilot Peer Mediation Institute with other peer mediators from Prince Georges County Schools. A keynote address was given by Federal Magistrate Charles B. Day in the Gold Ballroom. Afterwards, all the peer mediators were put into groups and traveled to other campus buildings for their workshops on negotiation skills, building consensus and other topics.Simultaneously, the peer mediation teachers attended a Teachers Institute.Mustang Mediator Ngoc- Bich Tran showed them her power point presentation about using her peer mediation skills in her future career. The teachers were impressed with her presentation. Lunch was provided by the University of Maryland. The groups came back together for another session. At the end Mr. Marvin Johnson, Executive Director of the National Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution, shared a message about overcoming obstacles and mediation careers. The peer mediators were awarded beautiful certificates.The Mustang Mediators who participated in this event were Jennifer Avelar, Sharnitta Hawkins, Kia Gedeon, Leonce Koyakosso, Desirae Johnson, Ranetta Steele, Ngoc-Bich Tran, Ebony Squire, Vanica Proctor and Alban Merino.
