Students who wish to use the library during the school day must have a pass from a teacher after 8:45 a.m.

**Students may use the library after school on Wednesdays as long as they have turned in a signed parent/guardian permission slip.  Permission slips are available on the circulation desk in the library.  Students must provide their own transportation home.

Circulation Policy

Students must have an agenda book or student planner in order to check out library books.  Students may take out three books at a time.  If a book is returned late, there is an overdue fine of ten cents per day charged for each book.  Overdue fines are not charged for school holidays, weekends, or days a student has an excused absence from school.  The maximum overdue fine that is charged is $5.00.

Students are responsible for paying for lost or damaged library books.  If a student owes a book or overdue fines to the library, their report card may be held until the obligation has been paid.

Overdue notices are sent to students through their homeroom teachers each week.

Collection

Students have access to more than 10,000 items in the library collection.  The books in the collection have been selected to support student reading interests and the school curriculum.  Thanks to Dr. Deasy’s Library Media Centers Improvement Initiative, more than $60,000 has been spent to update the Greenbelt Middle School library collection over the past three years.  This funding is in addition to school resources that have been allocated to the library program through the School Improvement Plan.

Computer Use Policy

Students may use school computers for school work or educational purposes only.  Consequences for misuse may include, but are not limited to, suspension of equipment access, confiscation of the technological device, disciplinary action commensurate with the level of misconduct, and/or legal action as appropriate.  For more information about acceptable use of school computers, please read the PGCPS Acceptable Use Policy.

Online Databases

All public schools in Prince George's County are participating in the Maryland K-12 Digital Library Project.  The project provides access to a collection of databases that students have access to from any computer, whether at school or at home.  Additional databases will be added if the budget permits.  Click on the link below to access the current databases.

http://sks.sirs.com  - SIRS offers two comprehensive databases, SIRS Knowledge Source (grades 8 and up) and SIRS Discoverer (grades 1-8).  These databases offer access to periodical articles, government reports, and web sites that students can use when completing research for their projects.

The Office of Library Media Services (PGCPS) has purchased a license for all staff and students in PGCPS to use the following databases:

http://www.worldbookonline.com - World Book Online offers access to the online edition of The World Book Encyclopedia as well as a dictionary, atlas, and activities such as Surf the Ages.  The interface is customizable so that it can easily be used by younger and older students.  A user name and password is required to use this database outside of school.

http://www.teachingbooks.net - Teachingbooks.net offers original, in-studio movies of authors and illustrators, audio excerpts of professional book readings, guides to thousands of titles and a wealth of multimedia resources on children's and young adult literature. A password is required to use this database outside of school.

http://online.culturegrams.com - Since 1974, the aim of CultureGrams has been to foster understanding and appreciation of the world's countries and peoples by creating and publishing excellent content.  This service provides information about 187 different countries and territories that includes maps, statistics, history, and a glossary.  A user name and password is required to use this database outside of school.

See Mrs. Young-Buckler for a copy of the brochure that lists the addresses, customer number and/or password required to use these databases from your home computer.
