2008-2009 Uniform Policy

 

Effective June 15, 2007, Gwynn Park High School will be a
MANDATORY UNIFORM School. The Uniform Policy is Non-Negotiable.

Every student at Gwynn Park High School is required to wear the uniform daily. Uniforms must be worn on school-sponsored field trips. The uniform policy was formulated by administrators, parents, teachers, and students. This policy incorporates the Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) system-wide dress code for students. All students are required to be in a full uniform on the first day of school.

Professional Appearance

Students must come to school dressed in full uniform. A full uniform consists of an approved top, bottom, shoes, accessories and the GPHS issued student badge.

All pants must be appropriately sized to eliminate any bagging or sagging. Cargo pants are prohibited. Shorts/skorts can be worn the first day of school until October 1, 2008 and again in the spring from April 15, 2009 through the end of the school year. All shirts are to be tucked into the pants, skorts and shorts. A black belt must be worn if belt loops are on the garment. No visible labels or logos on any article of clothing are allowed other than the GPHS logo.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES 

Electronic devices (IPods, CD Players, Gameboys,etc.) should be kept at home at all times. All cell phones must remain OFF (not on vibrate) during the instructional day. Failure to comply with this request will result in items being confiscated.

Females

Shirts/Tops/Sweaters: Young ladies wear

solid colored shirts (top button may be left

open) and may choose among:

• Long-sleeved solid black or white

oxford cloth shirt with GPHS logo.

• Long-or short-sleeved solid colored

black or white polo styled-shirt with

GPHS logo.

• Black sweater vest with GPHS logo.

• Black long-sleeved cardigan sweater

with GPHS logo.

Slacks/Capri Pants: Young ladies wear

solid colored khaki (beige) slacks or pants. No

Cargo pants (Cargo pants have large pockets

on the sides), no jeans, no bell-bottoms, no

stretch, and no spandex.

Shorts: No shorts for young ladies.

Skirts: Young ladies wear solid colored khaki

(beige) skirts worn at waist level and must be

fingertip length (in accordance with the

PGCPS dress code policy. Styles include:

pleated, straight, kick pleat, and A-line.

Males

Shirts/Tops/Sweaters: Young men wear

solid colored shirts, tops or sweaters and may

choose among:

• Long-sleeved solid black or white

oxford cloth shirt with GPHS logo.

• Long-sleeved or short sleeved solid

colored black or white polo-styled shirt

with GPHS logo.

• Black sweater vest with GPHS logo.

• Black long sleeve cardigan sweater

with GPHS logo.

Slacks: Young men wear solid colored khaki

(beige) slacks. No Cargo pants (Cargo pants

have large pockets on the sides), no jeans, no

bell bottoms, no stretch, and no spandex.

Shorts: (For young men only) Young men

wear solid colored khaki (beige) shorts, must

be no more than 3 inches above the knee.

 

All Students

Blazer (optional):
Solid black blazer with a lapel and GPHS logo.

Belts:
Must be solid black. No ornamental belts (i.e. Bullets/metals, no designs, no electronic belts).

Shoes:
Must be a solid color – solid black or solid white. This also applies to sneakers, boots, and sandals.

  • ALL laces must be tied.

  • ALL toes must be enclosed.

  • Tennis shoes must be solid in color (black or white).

  • No furry boots. Only black or khaki.

  • Females cannot wear high heels over 2 ½ inches.

  • Black or khaki boots

Accessories:

Approved:

  • Solid black or white socks.

  • Solid black or white tights or full length pantyhose (Females).

Not Approved:

  • Thigh highs.

  • Knee Highs

  • Fishnet pantyhose or stockings


Head Coverings:
As stated in the PGCPS system-wide dress code for students, “Headdresses can be worn for religious or health reasons only.”

Backpacks:
Backpacks can be utilized to transport educational items to and from school but cannot be used to carry items between classes. Clear or mesh backpacks are strongly encouraged and can be utilized before, during and after school.

Outwear:
All outwear (jackets/coats) must be placed in your locker once you enter the building.

These styles and fabrics are NOT permitted:

  • Electronic belts.

  • Stretch or form-fitting clothing.

  • Baggy pants.

  • Denim – jeans, pants, jackets, skirts.

  • Cargo or Painter pants.

  • Cargo shorts.

  • Cropped shirts.

  • Button-less V-neck shirts or blouses.

  • Slippers or flip-flops.

  • T-Shirts of any type.

Financial Hardship

Parents/guardians who are not able to purchase the mandatory uniform due to financial hardship must submit a letter of explanation to the principal. The principal, chair of the uniform committee and PTSA executive officers will review hardship requests to determine the assistance needed.

Parents/guardians requesting assistance will receive a response within 15 days of the request.


Exemptions ( New Students)

Students new to the district after September 2, 2008, will be allowed a grace period of 10 school days to comply with the uniform policy.

Religious Considerations

Parents/guardians who object to the policy based on religious beliefs must present to the principal a signed letter explaining their belief.

The parent/guardian and the principal will meet to discuss the exemption.

Dress Policy Violations and Consequences


(Administrator’s Discretion)
 

1st Violation – Student receives a “Uniform Violation Notice” to give to parent explaining their infraction.

2nd Violation – Student is referred to his/her Assistant Principal who will make parental contact by telephone or in writing that a second violation has occurred.

3rd Violation – Parent conference is held to reiterate the parameters of the policy and consequences of future violations.

4th Violation – Student is placed in In-school Suspension for 2 days.

5th Violation – The behavior is deemed persistent disobedience/insubordination and will be dealt with in accordance with the Code of Student Conduct (suspension from school).
