Department of School
Improvement and Accountability

Mission
The mission of the Department of School Improvement and Accountability is to coordinate all facets of school improvement planning in the Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS).  This coordination occurs by consolidating federal, state, and local school improvement planning processes; implementing and institutionalizing the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE)  Process for School Improvement; and monitoring and reporting progress of school improvement initiatives identified in the Bridge to Excellence Master Plan.

Programs and Services
The school improvement planning process for the PGCPS supports and reinforces the Bridge to Excellence Master Plan. The process requires each school to develop, implement and monitor a School Improvement Plan (SIP) designed to prepare students for successful citizenship in the twenty-first century.

The SIP provides the framework, direction, and focus required of each school to successfully implement the goals delineated in the Bridge to Excellence Master Plan. The SIP is intended to be a “living” document for the school.  It should be reviewed, evaluated and refined regularly.  The School Improvement Plan (SIP) outlines the specific activities, strategies, and interventions that each school will implement to ensure academic success for all students, grades K-12.

Consistent with the Bridge to Excellence Master Plan, the SIP seeks to ensure that all students in all subgroups make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).  The SIP is aligned with federal legislation such as  No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and state mandates such as the Bridge to Excellence in Public Schools Act and the Voluntary State Curriculum

The Department of School Improvement and Accountability serves as the liaison between the offices of the Superintendent and the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) on matters relating to comprehensive school reform, and school improvement under the Maryland State Assessment and NCLB.
