Text Box: Exciting reading is taking place at Allenwood. As we explained at our Back to School Night, students who read at least 30 minutes each evening have an educational advantage. In the course of a child’s elementary education (K—6) the children who read consistently for thirty minutes five days per week will have attained the equivalent of 105 additional school days over those who do not. The vocabulary of these students is also enhanced and is evident in the writing they do.
Thus far this school year, we are almost half way to our goal of One Million Minutes for our Rocket Readers Club. Text Box: Students are continually logging weekly minutes on their reading log sheet and having the parents validate the time with their signatures. Please remember that reading for thirty minutes is a part of every students’ reading grade as reminded on homework sheets, report cards and in conferences.
I would also like to publically thank all the teachers and staff who helped make our first Parent Reading Night a success. Those in attendance were actively engaged in learning the Strategies That Work so students can practice them at home. It was fun to see parents wearing the Brain Text Box: hats, reading with their children and sharing their Inner Conversations.

Text Box: For the first time in twenty years, Allenwood Elementary School participated in the County’s Science Bowl on Channel 96. Under the supervision of the team’s sponsor, Mrs. Blackmon the following students represented us very well: Gloria Text Box: Bell, Arthur Bradley, Courtney Grooms, and Jeremy Panafala.
The show will be televised the week of November 28 through December 4, 2005 at the following times: Monday and Wednesday at 1 pm; Tuesdays at 9 am and 7 pm; Text Box: Thursdays at 7 am and 7 pm; Fridays at 6 pm; Saturdays and Sundays at 8 am and 9 pm.
