Text Box: The county joined the other counties of Maryland to enhance student attendance each day. Children should miss no more than five days in a school year and need to have a written note explaining each absence. Along that same line, students must be in their classrooms at the 7:45 start time. Tardies are considered a form of absence and must be monitored. Last week a booklet was sent to each parent explaining the Attendance Policy and its implications. If you did not receive this booklet, please let you child’s teacher know so one can be given to you.

Text Box: What a fabulous beginning to a new school year! It is so exciting to watch students come into the building ready and prepared to learn. Teachers have commented on how enthusiastic everyone has been this year. We also want to thank everyone who attended Back To School Night and participated in the Bring Your Child To School On the First Day activity. What a fantastic way to model the home-school connection! As you know, you are welcome to visit us at any time. Please sign-in with the secretaries and obtain a pass to the classrooms. This pass system ensures the safety of the students and staff in the building.
As you know everyone at Allenwood is ENGAGED (Ensuring Noticeable Gains and Growth Every Day). Each evening please ask you child what new skill he/she has learned. He/She should be able to tell Text Box: you specific concepts taught each day in every subject. In order to increase each student’s capacity to recall learning experiences, we must be asking specific questions at home since you are the students’ first teacher and a critical part in the learning cycle.
Students will be receiving homework every evening and on weekends in Reading and Mathematics. Homework is an integral part of the learning process since it reinforces skills taught during the regular school day. This home practice allows students to build confidence and gives the teachers feedback on what has been mastered and what skills need to be re-taught. If your child is spending an exorbitant amount of time on homework, please contact the teacher.
I must reiterate the importance of attendance this year. Text Box: Welcome Back
Text Box: Rocket Readers of Allenwood Plan to Read One Million Minutes
Text Box: Ms. Stumb on the roof?????
Book Logs are filling up! Minutes are mounting! Students are hoping to reach the MILLION MINUTE mark!
Allenwood has “kicked off” the Rocket Reader —Million Minute Club. Students are being asked to read thirty minutes each day, record it on their Text Box: reading logs, and have an adult initial it. These logs will be given to the homeroom teacher and the minutes recorded for the school. When the students in the building have reached the 100,000 minute marks, we will celebrate with a school wide activity.
When the MILLION MINUTES have been reached, Ms. Text Box: Stumb’s desk, chair and work will be moved to the roof! (She hopes it is a sunny day!)
We already have over 300 memberships and Ms. Sabalis’ class has read over 1,480 minutes in the last 8 days!
