Text Box: Mission Statement for School Improvement Plan

The school improvement planning process for Prince George’s County Public Schools supports and reinforces the Bridge to Excellence Master Plan.  The process requires each school to develop, implement and monitor a school improvement plan (SIP) designed to prepare students for successful citizenship in the twenty-first century.  The two-year SIP provides the framework, direction, and focus required of each school to successfully implement the goals delineated in the Bridge to Excellence Master Plan.  The SIP is intended to be a “living” document for the school.  It should be reviewed, evaluated and refined regularly.  The school improvement plan (SIP) outlines the specific activities, strategies, and interventions that each school will implement to ensure academic success for all students, grades K-12.

Consistent with the Bridge to Excellence Master Plan, the SIP seeks to ensure that all students in all subgroups make adequate yearly progress.  The SIP is aligned with federal legislation such as the No Child Left Behind Act and state mandates such as, the Bridge to Excellence in Public Schools Act and the Voluntary State Curriculum.

Section I. Executive Summary

A.    Introduction

Beltsville Elementary School offers a rigorous, enriched and highly structured educational program that develops the intellectual skills and concepts for strong academic achievement and is a school not in improvement.  This message is continuously conveyed to our parents and local community through school newsletters, PGCPS school status reports and through PTA related materials. Our students attend class from 7:45 AM until 1:55 PM. During the school day, our 796 students receive instruction in self-contained classrooms with one teacher per class. At each grade level, one classroom services Special Education students in an inclusion setting. These classrooms are serviced by Special Education teachers, paraprofessionals, classroom aides and dedicated classroom assistants.  Beltsville Elementary also is the home of a class of kindergarten age students with autism. This school year brought new additions to Beltsville Elementary when we became the home of an additional class of Pre-Kindergarten students as well as 11 kindergarten and first grade age students with autism.  These students participate in our regular education program with the assistance of dedicated assistants.  Looking ahead to the 2007-2008 school year, Beltsville Elementary will again expand, adding a second class of Pre-Kindergarten children along with the expansion of our autism program.  Some key instructional elements of Beltsville Elementary School include a computer lab that accommodates an entire class, Pre-Algebra instruction for qualifying sixth grade students, Reading Recovery for struggling first graders, and a parent liaison to assist our limited English proficient population. We also offer an Honors curriculum for eligible sixth graders and additional educational support to our Limited English Proficient population.

Beltsville Elementary's vision is one that incorporates the following five core beliefs: Children are our business -they come first; parents are our partners; victory is in the classroom; continuous improvement in teaching, leadership, and accountability is the key to our success; and every member of the Beltsville Elementary community shares the responsibility for successful schools. Our vision is proudly displayed as you enter the building and consistently communicated to the Beltsville Elementary stakeholders through Back to School Night, PTA meetings and events, school newsletters and on our website.
