AGE REQUIREMENTS:

The Maryland State Board of Education adopted recommendations by the Maryland Kindergarten Committee on December 4-5, 2001, which include changing the entrance day for schooling from December 31 to September 1. As a result, the State Board adopted the required changes in COMAR, May 23, 2002. As a result of this adoption, children will have to be at least five years of age by September 1 before being allowed to start kindergarten. This change will be phased in until school year 2006-07. The plan began changing the eligibility dates for children entering pre-kindergarten for the 2002-03 school year. Therefore, attached please find an age chart for pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and first grade students.

If you have any questions, please call the Pupil Accounting and School Boundaries Department at 301-952-6300 or email pasbt@pgcps.org. Visit our website for developments on this matter.
