MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL, MR. TUCKER

Message from the Principal, Mr. Tucker

The upcoming winter season means that you should be familiar with the emergency weather operating procedures for P.G. County Schools.  Decisions concerning early morning school closings or delayed openings are generally made by 5 a.m. An announcement is then provided to 38 radio stations and 8 television stations.  This information may also be accessed on the school system’s web page at www.pgcps.org and also www.schools-out.com.  After 6 a.m., you can also access the school system’s Voice Mail Bulletin Board by calling 301-952-6000.  Wait for the opening message, then press Number 1.  A recorded message will indicate delayed openings or school closings.  In addition, the school system’s cable station, 96, will broadcast a “crawl” message no later than 6 a.m.  Decisions regarding early dismissal when schools close at half-day or one or two hours early are communicated to area radio and television stations for broadcast.  During emergency weather conditions, you should monitor the weather reports on television or radio and listen for announcements concerning school operations.  When schools are closed early or all day, all evening activities are cancelled.  When there are inclement weather conditions, follow the above procedures and PLEASE DO NOT CALL SCHOOL.

As our winter break approaches, many of us will celebrate special holidays.  While our country is at war, we remember how grateful we are to live in such a wonderful and free country.  We hope your loved ones are with you, but we know some of you will miss friends and family who are over seas in the armed forces.  As we celebrate our family traditions, we will think especially of them and hope they will return safely to you very soon.  I wish you all a joyous and peaceful holiday.

Notes from the Office

We continue to focus on the importance of keeping our students and staff in a safe environment.  In order to do this, we must strictly enforce our policy of having everyone who enters the school obtain a visitor’s pass from the office before they go anywhere in the building.  Be sure to let us know in writing or, if an emergency, call the school if you need someone to pick up your child who is not listed on your student information card.  Additionally, when you call school to obtain information regarding your child, the office staff may ask specific questions about your child in order to ascertain the relationship of the caller to the child.  This procedure is for the safety and security of all our students.  Please be sure to notify the school as soon as possible if you have any changes in your address or telephone numbers.  Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

If you need to get a message to your child regarding a change in their after-school procedure, please call the office before 1:30 p.m. If you are planning to pick your child up for early dismissal, please plan to come to the office before 1:40 p.m.  Please do not call and request that a student be called to the office to wait until you arrive.  Students will be called to the office when you come to sign them out.  Students must follow their usual dismissal procedure unless we have written notification from parents.  If a student tells us he/she is to go home with another student, both parents must notify us in writing or students will be required to follow their plan to go directly home or to their sitters after school.

Here are the pod phone numbers to call when you want to leave messages for teachers.  Also included is the number to call the school nurse, Ms. Maxfield, the cafeteria for meal-related issues, and the ESOL parent liaison, Mrs.Tuveson, for Spanish speaking callers.

From the Counselor’s Corner

As part of our character education program, our students will be preparing care packages for the senior citizens at the Mariner Nursing Home in Laurel. The packages will be delivered by students on the Deerfield Run Student Advisory Board.  In addition, two of our classes have been invited to visit and sing for the residents.  If you would like your child to participate in this project, please consider having your child shop for and contribute one or two items from the following list:  Men’s or women’s slippers or socks; after- shave lotion, colognes, lotions or powder; candy and sugar  free candy; mugs, combs, brushes, deodorant, chapstick, playing cards, puzzle books or knick knacks.  Please send only new and un-opened items.  Our deadline for donations is Wednesday, December 12, 2007.  Thank you in advance for your support.

Holiday Concert

Our Holiday Concert will be held on Wednesday, December 19, at 6:30 p.m.  Students who are participating need to arrive promptly at 6 p.m.  We invite the entire Deerfield Run community to attend this festive event during which our first through sixth grade chorus will perform.   The theme this year is “Hello to All the Children of the World.”   This year our resident artist, Mr. Tim Gregory, will participate in our production.  The students have been working very hard to make this a truly memorable evening.  Please plan to attend.   Look for more information to come home with the students who are participating.   Hope to see you all there!

Nurse’s Note

This is a reminder to parents to please bring your child’s medication and physicians’ order forms to the school nurse as soon as possible.  The change of season is quickly approaching and for many asthmatics, weather changes are a trigger for breathing problems.  Let’s keep our students comfortable as well as safe and get these medications to school.  Thank you for your immediate attention to this matter.
