The Prince George’s County Public School System’s Department of Family
and Community Outreach and Strategic Partners will host the 21st
Annual Comer School Development Program Team Retreat & Family/Community
Resource Fair at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland,
on Saturday, September 30, 2006, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
The Comer
School Development Program Team Retreat & Family/Community Resource Fair
is designed to enhance the professional growth and development of school
teams in over 100 schools within Prince George’s County as well as teams
from across the United States. This is a specialized in-service
opportunity for members of School Planning and Management Teams (SPMT/SIT),
Student and Staff Support Teams (SSST/IEP), Parent Teams (PTA/PTO/PTSA,
etc.), as well as Departmental, Grade level, Central Office and Student
Leadership Teams. These school teams are comprised of instructional and
support staff, parents and community members, administrators and
students (at the secondary level). Participants will deepen their
understanding of the School Development Program; a nationally recognized
model for comprehensive school reform that focuses on promoting the
application of child and adolescent growth and development theories and
positive human relations strategies and principles to encourage active
engagement and collaborative partnerships between families, schools and
communities. As a systemic approach to school improvement, The School
Development Program draws on the talents, strengths, skills, and
interests of parents, school staff and students as collaborative
decision makers and brings these important stakeholders together to
develop policies, procedures, programs and practices that promote
academic excellence for all students.
Retreat coordinators, attendees, presenters, and
facilitators include central office staff, school administrators,
teachers, support staff, students, parents, university colleagues,
community leaders, and business partners who volunteer to share
research-based best practices in comprehensive school reform that focus
on improving student outcomes. Over 20 sessions will be offered this
year at the retreat with topics on child/adolescent development, NCLB,
Special Education, cultural diversity, change theory and much more. The
day will host vendors and school displays as well as student
performances by “Colours”. The day will be an exciting event
highlighting just some of the premier features of Prince George’s County
Public Schools, the 18th largest school district in the
nation and 2nd largest in the state of Maryland.
We welcome media coverage of this event where hundreds
of Prince George’s County Public School teachers, administrators,
parents and students come out on a Saturday and eagerly participate.
Educators and parents from other school districts both locally and
across the United States will also attend.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. John E. Deasey, Chief
Executive Officer, Prince George’s County Public Schools. The theme of
the retreat is “Keys to Continuous Improvement”. Dr. Ann Levett,
Executive Director, Yale Child Study Center, National Comer School
Development Program, will be in attendance to bring remarks, as well as,
Dr. Beatrice Tignor, Chair, PGCPS Board of Education.
The Department of Family and Community Outreach and Strategic
Partnerships PGCPS Comer School Development Program has been recognized
for excellence and since 1994 has served as one of only four Regional
Professional Development and Training Centers for the Yale University
Child Study Center’s National School Development Program.
