College Preparation Checklist

9th Grade:

  • Work closely with counselors to select courses (upper level) that will prepare you for college
  • Check entrance requirements for a variety of colleges and programs
  • Become involved in school activities
  • Review Job-O results to explore educational possibilities
  • Visit your Career Center
  • Take the CDM (Interest Inventory) in 9th grade Social Studies
  • Explore volunteer opportunities for the summer
  • Explore summer school opportunities for enrichment
  • Consider taking PSAT for practice (October)

10th Grade

  • Continue to plan a rigorous academic program
  • Continue involvement in school activities
  • Use the CDM to refine career and educational possibilities
  • Use the Guidance Computer and College/Career Resource Center to gather additional information
  • Make sure your high school program is meeting college admissions requirements
  • Explore work or enrichment opportunities and volunteer programs for the summer
  • Take PSAT/NMSQT for practice (October)
  • Consider taking SAT I for practice

11th Grade

  • Take SAT I prep class (spring semester)
  • Take PSAT/NMSQT (October) if you are planning to go to college
  • Review your academic and extracurricular program – are you prepared to college?
  • Use the Guidance Computer College Search Program
  • Begin writing colleges for detailed information
  • Narrow your college choices
  • Visit schools which interest you – (spring – summer)
  • Attend National College Fairs in Washington, D.C. and Baltimore (fall semester)
  • Discuss finances with parents
  • Attend Career Forum(s)
  • Investigate ROTC application
  • Begin application process for military academies
  • Attend Financial Aid Workshop(s) (November, March)
  • Attend Prince George’s County College Fair – Spring Semester
  • Take SAT I prep class if needed
  • Take SAT I and/or ACT (May or June)
  • Explore early decision options at colleges
  • Take SAT II, AP (May)
  • Develop your resume for use with college recommendations (summer)
  • Begin securing letters of recommendation for college and scholarships from teachers
  • Investigate summer courses and programs offered to juniors by colleges

12th Grade

  • The College Process Guide for Seniors - this is a link to a printable pdf file that guides you through the college application process
  • Apply to take the SAT I or ACT (if you haven’t already taken them or if you want to improve your scores)
  • Apply to take the achievement tests
  • Take SAT I prep class if needed (fall)
  • Make sure your letters of recommendation are completed
  • Update your resume
  • Apply for college admissions (October, November)
  • Investigate early decision programs – check deadline (September, October)
  • Find out about your school’s transcript request process (October)
  • Continue campus visits
  • Attend the National College Fairs in Washington, D.C. and Baltimore (fall semester)
  • Check with counselor regarding available scholarships (ongoing)
  • Apply for college housing early (University of Maryland December) be sure letters of recommendation are on file (November, December)
  • Apply for scholarships (ongoing)
  • Attend Financial aid Workshop(s) (November – March)
  • Apply for financial aid (January)
  • Attend Prince George’s College Fair (in evening) – Spring Semester
  • Take AP tests (May)
  • Take time to decide which college is “right” for you.  Weigh the college’s offer against your personal and financial requirements (May)
