National Honor Society is an organization of elite students who demonstrate the four pillars of service, character, scholarship, and leadership.  Students are nominated based on their cumulative GPA, which must be a 3.00.  Once students submit their application it is reviewed by the faculty council.  This application process is also includes teacher recommendations of the nominated students.  Upon a final review the nominees essays are read and the faculty council makes a final decision on those who will be accepted into the National Honor Society.

Criteria for Selection

  1. Attendance at Frederick Douglass High School for one complete semester.
  2. Cumulative 3.5 GPA since the beginning of grade 9.
  3. Performance of one community service activity.
  4. Active participation in at least 3 school activities since 9 for seniors and 2 activities since grade 9 for juniors. Certain activities count as more than one activity.
  5. Acceptable evaluation for character, service, and leadership by faculty and activity sponsors.

Selection Procedures 

  1. In October, Student Activity Information forms are sent to juniors and seniors who have a cumulative 3.5 GPA since the beginning of grade 9.
  2. Completed Student Activity Information forms are processed.
  3. Students are evaluated for character, leadership, and service by the faculty and activity sponsors.
  4. The National Honor Society Faculty Council reviews the pertinent data for each student.
  5. Students accepted for membership are tapped at the Induction Ceremony in December.

After the rigorous selection process is complete new members are inducted into the Robert F. Frisby Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS).  The faculty, staff, students and parents of Frederick Douglass High School would like to congratulate this year's inductees.

To hold as fundamental and worthy
an untarnished character,
To endeavor intelligently and courageously

and to give of myself freely in service to others.
In so doing, I shall prove myself worthy
of a place in the National Honor Society.
