WHAT IS STUDENT SERVICE LEARNING/SSL?
Student Service Learning is a graduation
requirement for all students in
Maryland. In Prince George's
County, students must complete 36
service hours.

SERVICE
CATEGORIES:
-
Direct Action brings the
student face-to-face with the
people.
Examples of direct action are hospital
visits, tutoring, etc.
-
Indirect Action is work that
needs to get done. Students do not
necessarily meet the people they are
helping. An example of indirect
action is a food drive.
-
Advocacy Action deals with
social or political issues.
Examples would include writing letters
to legislators/writing letters for
change…

OTHER WAYS
TO EARN HOURS:
Visit the sick in hospitals, serve
dinner at a homeless shelter;
participate in an organized march,
participate in school beautification
projects; collect clothing for people in
need.

REFLECTION:
After students have completed service
hour activities, they must look back and
reflect on how their time and service
assisted others. Reflections should
also include information about what
students have learned about themselves
and others. In other words, students
must “record” the STUDENT SERVICE
LEARNING experience.

SERVICE LEARNING at DUVAL HIGH SCHOOL,
