Tuition Waiver and Who Needs One?

Only a parent or court-appointed legal guardian may register a student in a Prince George’s County Public School.  If a student is residing with anyone else, they must either pay tuition to attend school, obtain legal, court-appointed guardianship or apply for a waiver of tuition.  Call the Department of Pupil Accounting and School Boundaries at 301-952-6302 for additional information.  (See Board of Education Policy Number 5111).  Do not let anyone register a child on a notarized statement giving guardianship.

Who Needs a Tuition Waiver
Pupils whose parent(s) or legal, court-appointed guardian(s) is/are not bona fide residents of Prince George’s County are considered non-resident pupils.  Non-resident pupils may be enrolled in Prince George’s County Public Schools if they are residing with a bona fide resident of the county and request a waiver of tuition on behalf of the pupil.  Waivers may be granted on the basis of extenuating circumstances of  either financial hardship or home conditions.  If the student, and the responsible adult identify themselves as being homeless, and live in Prince George’s County a waiver will still be necessary.   If the parent lives outside Prince George’s County a waiver is required. See page 11 for “Homeless Students” for the correct procedures to follow.   DO NOT SEND RELATIVES TO THE COURTHOUSE FOR GUARDIANSHIP.  PLEASE REFER THEM TO PUPIL ACCOUNTING AND SCHOOL BOUNDARIES.

Tuition Waiver Approval
After an interview with the applicant, the tuition waiver committee will send a denial or approval letter to both the applicant and the school.  Place this letter in the student’s cumulative folder.  When enrolling the student on the computer, be sure to place a ‘7’ in the status code field.  This will identify the student as a tuition waiver student.

Students with tuition waivers have no special privileges in school.  Before registering they must have all of the required registration materials of any student entering your school for the first time.  Example:  Proof of residence, shot records, report cards, etc.

Renewal of Tuition Waivers
Once a Tuition Waiver is granted, (Conditional waivers are not counted.  They are usually good for a limited period of time) the waiver remains unless:

  • Student graduates
  • Student is living with someone other than the original tuition waiver applicant
  • Student is withdrawn from Prince George’s County Schools and is re-entering the school system
  • Student has a court appointed guardian or custodian
Please include the tuition waiver letter in student’s file.
