Instructional Strategies to Prepare Students for the High School Assessments

Emphasize authentic, “real-world” connections and applications.
   
Teach both concepts and skills, ensuring that the mathematics is correct and that students understand the language of math.
   
Use instructional strategies which include but are not limited to:
 
  • cooperative group work;

  • manipulatives and technology;

  • questions which probe, prompt, and redirect student explanations;

  • multiple representations of mathematical ideas;

  • engaging tasks which encourage students to think about, talk about, and write about mathematical ideas;

  • assessment formats which are integrated into the instructional process, including performance-based assessment tasks.
