What Do We Want Students to 
Know and Be Able to Do?

 

Schools must now prepare students for a change-dominated, technology-driven world. If you are under 25, you can expect to change jobs every four years. Students entering the workplace will be expected to demonstrate mastery of the following skills, identified by the Fortune 500 companies:

• Teamwork/Interpersonal Skills

• Problem Solving/Decision Making

• Oral/Written Communication

• Creative Thinking

• Leadership

• Goal Setting/Motivation

• Computation/Math Problem Solving

• Organizational Effectiveness

Similarly, the Maryland State Department of Education and the Maryland Business Roundtable identify the following "Skills for Success" in the workplace:

Learning Skills: Planning, monitoring, and evaluating learning experiences.

Thinking Skills: Thinking creatively and strategically to achieve goals.

Communication Skills: Planning, participating in,and evaluating communication experiences.

Technology Skills: Using and evaluating technologies as labor-enchancing/problem-solving tools.

Interpersonal Skills: Working responsibly and cooperatively with others.
