Using the Web to Prepare for a research project on two
great leaders.
This assignment
was created for intermediate and advanced level students of
English for Speakers of Other Languages
Do you have a Monday holiday soon? Do you know why? You will be learning more about the American civil rights movement and who helped it to be as successful as it has been. Do you know who Martin Luther King, Jr. was and what he did? Do you know who Mohatmah Gandhi was and what he did? Do you know what they have in common and how they are different? During these lessons you will learn more about these two great men and prepare to respond to a prompt.
Your first task will be to create a KWL chart for each of the two leaders. Don't forget that if you don't know anything about these men you will be writing many questions in the "What I want to know?" section of the charts. Be sure to ask questions that will really give you important information about each person. If you already know information about these men you will write what you know in the "What I Know" section of the charts. You will be completing the "What I Learned" section as you use the web, read books and watch videos. You may make your charts by hand or by using The Student Writing Center. After you make the charts you can return to this web-based lesson.
You
may click on the following links to learn more about Martin Luther King,
Jr. While you are reading you might find a picture or two (no more)
that you think might be good to insert into your final report. Open
your folder in the server and start a new page titled PHOTOS. Save
your photos to your photo page. (If you can't remember how to do
this, just let your teacher or friend know and you will get help.)
Don't forget to look for answers to the questions you asked. It is certainly appropriate to write down other information that you learn. Do not copy whole sentences. Your notes should be just parts of sentences.
1. An
easy timeline on the Life of Martin Luther King, Jr.
2. A
more detailed chronology on the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.
3. A simple biography
on the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.
4. Great
Photos of Martin Luther King, Jr.
When
you finish taking notes about Martin Luther King, Jr., you may start taking
notes about Gandhi. There are some good sites listed below.
1. Stories
that Gandhi told and that were told about him. There are some good
photos.
2. Information
written in an Indian language with some English. It has nice pictures
and stamps with Gandhi. The connecting sites are good. Don't
try to use the movies, they are not good.
After
completing your KWL chart, you will be making a Venn diagram comparing
the life and efforts of Gandhi with those of Martin Luther King, Jr.
You might want to open Inspiration to make your Venn diagram, or
you can do it by hand. You will be using your completed Venn diagram
to complete the prompt.
