HISTORY AND TRADITION
Our school was named for Henry G. Ferguson (Fergie), who was born in California. Fergie attended St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, then went on the Harvard, graduating in 1904.
After working as a graduate geology student in Iceland and for an iron company in the upper Michigan peninsula, Fergie went to the Philippines with the Geological Survey. He returned to the United States in 1910 to attend Yale University where he was awarded a Doctorate Degree.
Dr. Ferguson married Alice Lescinska Lowe, and he and Alice lived in Washington, D.C. However, in 1924, they purchased a summer and weekend place on Bryan Point Road in Accokeek.
Both Fergusons were interested in community activities. Mrs. Ferguson donated the first vehicle used by the Accokeek Fire Department. After Alice's death in 1951, Dr. Ferguson established the Alice Ferguson Foundation in 1954. The foundation has awarded scholarship funds to teachers for regular and advanced degrees, and a grant from the foundation made possible the establishment of the Accokeek Branch of the Prince George's County Memorial Library.
The Ferguson farm and its facilities have been developed to provide environmental education experiences, including overnight camping to the local school children. Many Prince George's and Charles County students have spent time at "Hard Bargain Farm."
In 1962, our school opened bearing the name Henry G. Ferguson Elementary School. Today, this school serves the entire elementary school population of the Accokeek community. Henry Ferguson became a TAG Magnet in 1986.
