Wendy Babb
Reading, English 9
Wendy Babb has taught in Prince George’s County (Drew Freeman Middle School, Largo High School, and now C. H. Flowers High School) for the past 7 years after a career in New York. She is a graduate of Fordham University. In addition to teaching reading and English classes, she co-sponsors the Nu Alpha Omega Club.

Testing Coordinator, English 9, SAT Preparation
Leah Batts has 34 years of teaching English Language Arts in Prince George’s County and is the Testing Coordinator, SAT Preparation, and English 9 teacher at CH Flowers High School. She has worked at Buck Lodge and James Madison Middle Schools and Potomac and Gwynn Park High Schools. She has served as Department Chairperson and English Teacher Coordinator. She is a graduate of Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem North Carolina.

English Department Chair, English 9
Patricia Bradford, Chair of the English Department, is a graduate of Tennessee State University (BA, 1971) and the University of the District of Columbia (MA, 1995) in English Education and English Composition and Rhetoric. She has taught for 17 years (10 in Washington, DC and 7 in the Prince George’s County). She is a teacher consultant with the D. C. Area Writing Project (Howard University) and a member of the National Council of Teachers of English.
Erika Conner
English 11, SAT Preparation
Erika Conner is a first-year teacher at Charles Flowers High School where she teaches SAT Prep and English/Language Arts 11. Prior to joining the Prince Georges County Public School community, Ms. Conner worked as a long-term substitute at Benjamin Banneker Middle and Highland View Elementary schools in Montgomery County. She received her Baccalaureate in Literature from the State University of New York (SUNY Purchase) where she also minored in Drama Studies. Ms. Conner brings more than ten years of private industry experience in the fields of publishing and public relations. This includes working for Academic Press/Harcourt Brace, Inc. and The Terrie Williams Agency. Conner also devotes her time as an Assistant Director for the Jaguar Players Drama Club
Kelice Hunt
English 11
Kelice Hunt graduated from Norfolk State University with a B.A. in English. She has been teaching at C. H. Flowers High School for the past two years. She has also taught English in Virginia and North Carolina. She is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership at Bowie State University.
Valerie M. Constance
English 10 & 9
Ms. Constance comes to Herbert Charles Flowers High School from Eastern Michigan University, where she taught adults English and computer skills to UAW represented auto workers inside plants located in Southeastern Michigan for seven years. She taught college composition at Madonna University and the University of Michigan –Dearborn for four years. Ms. Constance, a graduate of the State University College at Brockport, New York was certified to teach secondary English 28 years ago, but she was unable to find a teaching assignment. She kept up her education and certification after moving to Michigan in 1978. In 1994, Ms. Constance got her Masters in Written Communication from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. December 2003, Ms. Constance received her Specialist degree in Educational Leadership from Eastern Michigan University. Ms. Constance is a member of Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society in Education. She is also a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW).
Lindsay (Van Tol) Joe
English 12
Lindsay (Van Tol) Joe is in her 3rd year at C.H. Flowers High School and her 6th year in Prince George’s County Schools. Before coming to Maryland, she spent some time teaching in Istanbul, Turkey. Ms. Joe has taught English for 9th, 10th and 12th graders of all levels and has experience teaching Public Speaking and Drama as well. Her undergraduate degree in English Literature and Secondary Education comes from Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts and her graduate degree in Counseling Psychology was obtained at Bowie State University in Bowie, MD.

Frank Johnson graduated from Hampton University. He is a first-year teacher with Prince George’s County Public Schools.

Stephanye T. Loftin
English 12 Honors, Advanced Placement
Stephanye Loftin teaches English 12 Honors and Advanced Placement at the Charles Herbert Flowers High School. She brings more than 30 years of educational experience into her classroom from a variety of settings -- from the English and Education Departments at North Carolina Central University; to the Office of Career Planning and Placement at Bowie State University. She has also taught at the junior high/middle school levels; as well as Upward Bound and GED programs from Baltimore City to Prince George’s County. Ms. Loftin completed undergraduate work at North Carolina Central University and graduate studies at Bowie State University, St. John’s College in Annapolis, and Goucher College in Towson, MD.
Nicki Mayo
Journalism, Speech
Nicki Mayo is a first-year teacher at the Charles Herbert Flowers High School where she teaches Speech, Journalism, and Yearbook. She serves as an advisor for The Jaguar Gazette Newspaper and the 2005 yearbook. Prior to joining the CHFHS teaching staff, Ms. Mayo worked as a reporter and producer for several news organizations. This includes Prince George’s County Community CTV 76, WTTG FOX 5 News, BET News, BET Tonight with Tavis Smiley and Ed Gordon, WJZ 13 (Baltimore), WMAR-TV2 (Baltimore) and National Public Radio (WAER-FM Syracuse). Ms. Mayo is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, The Radio Television News Directors Association, and the Society of Professional Journalists. The Syracuse University graduate holds dual-degrees in Speech Communications B.S. and African American Studies B.S. as well as an associate’s degree in Spanish Language and Linguistics.

Miss Price is currently completing her first year of teaching at Charles Herbert Flowers High School where she teaches tenth grade English. She graduated from Frostburg State University after majoring in English with a concentration in Secondary Education. The philosophy she lives and teaches by is "Reach for the moon, so that even if you miss, at least you are among the stars." In addition to teaching in the classroom, Miss Price gives her time as an instructor for the Language Lives after school program, as well as serving as the sponsor for the Charles Herbert Flowers Varsity and Junior Varsity Cheerleading squads.
Corliss Rivers
English 9
Corliss Rivers has been an educator in the Prince George’s County School system for the past seven years. Two of those years were spent at Thurgood Marshall Middle School where she taught seventh grade English Language Arts and had the opportunity to serve as a Team Leader, score the Maryland Functional Writing Test and sit on the School Based Instructional Team. For the past five years Mrs. Rivers has taught English Language Arts at Charles Herbert Flowers High School. While at Flowers, she has taught 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades and sponsored the class of 2004. Currently, she is teaching English Language Arts 9, sponsoring the Charles Herbert Flowers Pom squad and is one of two yearbook advisors. Mrs. Rivers obtained her B.A. in English from Howard University and was recognized by Who’s Who among America’s Teachers in 2004 and 2005.
Rebecca Stewart
English 9
Rebecca Stewart has been teaching at Charles Herbert Flowers High School for the past three years. Prior to coming to Prince George’s County, Ms. Stewart taught ninth and tenth grade English at Jefferson City Public High School in Jefferson City, Missouri. In addition to teaching, while in Jefferson City, she sponsored Kito Culture Club and co-sponsored Jay Magazine. Here at Flowers High School, Ms. Stewart has taught ninth grade Honors English, Science and Technology, and Progressive English classes. Outside of school, Ms. Stewart tutors for Porter Education and Information, Inc. which services students from Title-I schools to improve test scores and student performance. She also serves as a committee member and mentor for the Del-Teens committee of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Prince Georges Alumnae Chapter. Stewart is a graduate of Lincoln University—Missouri with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in English Education (BSEd). Currently she is pursuing a Master’s Degree in English at Bowie State University.
Katrina Wyatt
English 9
Katrina Wyatt graduated from the University of Maryland College Park with a B.S. degree in English Education. She has been teaching English at C. H. Flowers High School for three years; she has taught English at Springbrook High School in Montgomery County for one year and Laurel High School for two years.
English Department Activities
Ms. Joyce Price, English 10 teacher, sponsors the Jaguar Cheerleaders and tutors in the after-school Language Lives program.
Ms. Nicole Mayo, Journalism/Speech, is the newspaper and yearbook sponsor, works with students for the oratorical competitions.
Mrs. Lindsay Van Tol Joe works with students before and after school to provide tutoring and Writer's Workshop.
Mr. Brent Pasko, English 10 teacher, also coaches the varsity Wrestling Team and tutors in the Language Lives after school program.
Mrs. Patricia Bradford, English Department Chair, coordinates several essay and poetry competitions including the Black History Essay contest sponsored by the Prince George's Community Church.
Mrs. Katrina Scott Wyatt coordinates essay and poetry contests and works with the technology team to provide valuable professional opportunities for faculty and staff.
Annually English teachers participate in the annual African American Read-In sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).
Mrs. Patricia Allen coordinates the "Write a Book" Contest annually and last year she had three students who won first-place, second-place, and honorable mention in the county-wide competition.
Mrs. Wendy Babb is one of the co-sponsors of the student Christian Club that meets twice a week after school.
