Program Descriptions
Within the Social Studies Department we offer two distinct programs for students to get involved. Junior Statesmen of America and Mock Trial. Our teachers offer tutoring regularly and schedule vary depending on the teacher.
The Junior Statesmen of America
The Junior Statesmen of America at Charles Herbert Flowers High School is a student-run organization under the auspices of the Social Studies Department that educates concerned students about current political issues. The Junior Statesmen of America (JSA) was created by and for students. It is a non-partisan group filled with members that are interested in politics, government, debate, law, and education. What makes JSA so special is that students organize every aspect of it, from the school chapter level to the national administration. Our student leaders, elected by their fellow JSA members, plan and execute all of the conventions, conferences, and political awareness events put on by the Junior Statesmen members. Members also have the opportunity to take part in three exciting overnight conventions: Fall State, Congress, and Spring State. Junior State conventions allow for an exchange of ideas between students through debates, thought talks, problem solving, open forum discussions, mock trials, political fairs, and many various simulations such as campaign workshops. Junior Statesmen Conventions serve as supplements to school curricula. Teachers are encouraged to help students prepare for convention issues in advance by suggesting appropriate outside information. By participating in these activities, each member walks away with a more informed viewpoint on current issues.
Mock Trial
The Mock Trial Program is an exciting law-related educational program. It introduces students to the American legal system and provides challenging opportunity for personal growth and achievement. Mock trials help students gain practical understanding of the trial process and procedures, students also develop important lifetime skills, such as, critical analysis of problems, reasoning, listening, oral presentation and extemporaneous argument. Mock trials provides team work and a high level of cooperation from the participants.
The Mock Trial Program consists of local judges and practicing attorneys who evaluate students’ performance. Students are judged on their analysis and presentation skills, not on whether they win or lose the case. Local attorney coaches provide participating schools with legal support on the case assigned. Students are given case materials which include the law and facts of the case, rule of evidence and procedure, as well as, information about resource materials for teaching mock trials and alternative dispute resolutions.
Training is provided by teacher and attorney coaches. There is a co-coordinator for the Trials who work on competition scheduling, and score posting, in addition to organizing bus transportation, and keeps communication open among all parties.
Mock trials provide an active learning opportunity for students and develop important lifetime skills.
