Glenn Dale
Elementary School
Prince Georges County Public
Schools
Mandatory
Uniform Policy
Effective August 1,
2007
Effective August 1, 2007,
all Glenn Elementary School students will be required to wear a
uniform to school on a daily basis. Uniforms shall be worn
beginning the first day of school, with no grace period allowed
for students who are listed as registered before August 20,
2007. Students registered after this date will be given two
weeks following registration date to comply with the uniform
policy.
Theme/Spirit/Casual/Incentive
Days:
At the discretion
of school Administration, there may be various theme days
offered to afford a more relaxed style of dress. Those days
will be included on the schools website as highlighted dates to
remember. The school Administration will also develop incentive
programs for which a relaxed dress day may be awarded.
However, it is
important to note that, a more relaxed style of dress must still
comply with the requirements set forth in the Prince Georges
County Public Schools Administrative Procedure 5152, which
outlines the System-Wide Dress Code for Students.
Non-Compliance:
After all positive
efforts and incentives have proven to be ineffective, in
bringing the uniform non-compliant student(s) into compliance,
the following corrective actions will be taken:
1st,
2nd & 3rd Violations:
The child’s teacher
contacts the parent/guardians and notifies the principal that a
violation has occurred.
4th
Violation:
The Principal will
contact the child’s parents/guardians via telephone call and/or
written correspondence. The child will be required to change
into a school-provided alternate uniform for the remainder of
the day.
5th
Violation:
The child will be
required to change into a school-provided alternate uniform for
the remainder of the day. The school Administration will
arrange for a conference with the parents/guardians during which
the mandatory uniform policy will be reiterated and discussed.
The Administration will strive, with the assistance of the
parents/guardians, to alleviate any misunderstanding or
extenuating circumstances that may be hindering the child’s
ability to comply.
6th &
Subsequent Violations:
The child will be
required to change into a school-provided alternate uniform for
the remainder of the day. The school Administration will
arrange for a conference with the parents/guardians during which
the mandatory uniform policy will be reiterated and discussed.
If, at that time, all misunderstandings and extenuating
circumstances have been addressed to the satisfaction of the
parents/guardians and the school Administration, any of the
following actions may be taken:
- Parent/Guardian
shadowing day, during which the parent/guardian will be required
to attend school with the child for an entire day.
- Child
removal from class for an entire day. The child will be
required to complete classroom assignments provided by the
classroom teacher in another part of the school.

Uniform Policy Frequently Asked
Questions
Why a
dress code?
A dress
code can work toward strengthening our school’s social and
learning climate. The new dress code, as well as the new
personnel identification badges, will help school personnel
quickly identify visitors and/or trespassers on school grounds.
Will
the dress code be mandatory?
YES.
We sill strive, through positive reinforcement and incentives,
for a 100% uniform compliance within our school community. It
is the Administration’s hope that an affirmative (YES) vote for
the new Uniform Policy will also indicate a commitment, on the
part of the parent/guardian community, to helping meet
compliance expectations.
How
will violations to the Uniform Policy be handled?
Every
effort will be made to use positive reinforcement and incentives
to assure that the school achieve full compliance. When said
incentives and reinforcement fail to achieve compliance,
disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with Prince
Georges County Public Schools Administrative Procedure #600.
What
about religious attire?
As per
Prince Georges County Public Schools Administrative Procedure
#600, the school uniform program must accommodate students’
religious expression, i.e. wearing of yarmulkes or headscarves
as part of a religious practice.
Why
should I vote?
Once your
ballots are returned to the school, they will be tallied. If
75% of all ballots returned to the school are affirmative (YES),
the school administration will move forward with the uniform
program implementation. That means that if ONLY 4 ballots are
returned and 3 of those votes are affirmative, we move forward.
That is why it is so important that everyone cast their vote and
returns the ballots to the school within the specified
timeframe.
Where
can I purchase the uniform components?
The
various components of the uniform are available at local
retail stores:
