General
Information
Classroom Visitation/Observation Procedure: Parents, if you are
visiting/observing your child's classroom, after you've signed in
the front office, please see Ms. Underwood, Parent Liaison, in room
A-105 for a Parent Visitation Form/Packet. Forms may also be picked
up in the front lobby area.
School Uniforms: Warm
weather has arrived. To stay cool, students can wear a short-sleeved
uniform shirt, navy blue uniform pants, navy blue skirt or navy blue
skort. Shoes must be black, white or brown. Students should
not be wearing open toe shoes, flip flops or slippers. The uniform policy will be
strictly enforced.
School Calendar: Interested in events that are taking place
at G. James Gholson Middle School? Click

calendar.
"...Cause We Need to Talk!": Mr. Parker, the principal of
Gholson Middle School is conducting a series of discussion sessions
called, "...Cause We Need to Talk!" Please come out and share
any issues or concerns that you may have regarding our children and
school.
25 Book Campaign: Every student and faculty member will take on
the challenge of reading a total of 25 books between September and
June. The page stipulations for the books are as followed: Anyone
that reads a book that has between 125 and 249 pages gets credit for
having read 1 book; if their book has 250 pages, they will get
credit for 2 books, and so on. We invite you to join the Gholson family in this challenge
because children are most greatly influenced by the examples set at
home and in their community. The book for the month of May is
"Blood is Thicker", by Anne Schraff.
Staph Infection:
For information about staph infections, please visit the county's
webpage.
Visitor
Policy:
G. James Gholson M.S. welcome visitors. All visitors
must report to the main office, sign in, present photo ID, receive a
visitor's badge, and a member of the front office staff will assist
you.
Early
Dismissal:
Students
should notify the front office in writing if they are going to be
dismissed early. Early dismissal will not be allowed after 3:45pm.
Dismissal Procedures: Classes are dismissed at 4:10 pm. Bus
riders are to go directly to their buses. Students are not allowed to leave the school property
and then return to get on their bus. If a student is removed from a
bus, the student will have to find alternative transportation during
their suspension. Walkers are to wait in their class until they are
dismissed via the intercom then walk directly home.
Scheduling: Our school uses a hybrid A/B schedule. Students
attend 5 classes a day and each class is 75 minutes. Students
attend Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and
a Creative Arts class. The Creative Arts
classes include computer applications, band, general music, chorus,
TV media, physical education, health, art, and foreign
language. This schedule allows teachers to plan more effectively
with both their academic team and their department members. While
planning teachers use the
Prince George’s County curriculum frameworks, Standards of
Excellence, the Voluntary State Curriculum (VSC) and other
appropriate curriculum documents.
PTSA: G. James
Gholson Middle School's Parent/Teacher/Student/Association (PTSA) is
a vehicle by which the school relates to the community from which it
draws support. It is open to anyone interested in working for the
welfare of our school and students. The PTSA meets on the 2nd
Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm.
