GENERAL INFORMATION
ATTENDANCE

Your son/daughter should be in school and in all classes every day. Absences of more than a day or two in the school year are excessive. Time lost from instruction can never be regained simply by doing make-up work. There are emergencies and serious illnesses that may arise but those are the exceptions, not the rule.  Students cannot be expected to perform in a satisfactory manner if they are not present for instruction. Students must bring a note from parents/guardians when absent or needing to leave early.

What Are Considered Lawful Absences?
1. Death in the immediate family.
2. Illness of the student (certification from a doctor for continuous absences due to illness).
3. Court summons.
4. Hazardous weather conditions.
5. Work approved or sponsored by the school.
6. Observance of a religious holiday.
7. State emergency.
8. Suspension.
9. Lack of authorized transportation (does not include students denied authorized transportation for disciplinary reasons).

If your child drives to school, stress his/her responsibility for attendance and being on time.

County Policy: A student who is unlawfully absent 5 or more days per semester or 10 or more per year will receive no grade. A student in grades 7-12 may be lawfully absent but also subject to the same grading policy effecting unlawful absences if they do not complete the work missed during an absence. They will receive no grade and therefore, no credit, if they are absent 5 or more days per semester and 10 or more days per school year lawfully and do not complete make-up work for affected courses. Illness or Injury at School: The school's policy is that any student who becomes ill or injured at school may be sent home or to the nearest hospital. Parents/guardians will be notified immediately. All medicine needed to be taken during school hours must be left with Mrs. H. Bell, nurse. All medicine must have a doctor's approved form with signature (PS-51).

Student Dress Code

There is a dress code in the school system. Young men are reminded to wear their pants/trousers with support (belt) neatly around the waist. Young women are not expected to wear mini-skirts, see through clothing, short shorts, or halter-tops. The building is air-conditioned. NO CAPS/HATS.

Lunch
Since the lunch period is a part of the school program, all students must eat in the dining room. Students will not be permitted to leave school property for lunch. The dining room supplies, at a nominal cost, a hot lunch plate, which is a well-balanced meal, salads, as well as a-la-carte selections. Students may also bring their lunches and purchase milk or juice. Cost is: Students - $2.25 & Reduced Price $.40

Use of tobacco
No one is allowed to smoke or chew tobacco on school property. Violators will be subject to administrative action. Also, drugs, alcohol and weapons will result in a suspension/expulsion.

Possession of Portable Pagers

"Portable Pager" means any device carried, worn or transported by an individual to receive or communicate messages, including pagers and cellular telephones. It is not a violation of Maryland law or of this Code of Student Conduct for a student to be in possession of a portable pager on public school property in Prince George's County. However, it is a violation of the Code of Student Conduct to use such devices in a manner that will disrupt the school environment. All such portable pagers must be turned off while the student is riding the school bus, and throughout the entire school day.
