Departments and Offices

Office of School Counseling Services

The mission of the Prince George’s County Public Schools Office of School Counseling is to provide a comprehensive, developmental counseling program addressing the academic, career, and personal/social development for all students. School Counselors are professional school advocates who provide support to maximize student potential and academic achievement and minimize achievement disparities among all groups of students. In partnership with educators, parents or guardians and the community, School Counselors facilitate individual and system change to ensure all students have access to and are prepared with the knowledge and skills at the highest level as productive members of society.

Office of Student Records This office has jurisdiction over the policies and procedures related to all student records. They provide interpretation of and direction to school system inquiries regarding the Family Education Rights & Privacy Act and local records policy and procedures. They handle records-related problems, such as outside agency requests for information, legal name issues, and records release issues. They assure that court mandates, laws, regulations, and Board of Education policy is followed regarding student records. This office handles transcript retrieval, manages diploma issuance, and monitors the microfilming of records. They work closely with registrars and school secretaries while also developing and revising the Student Records Guidelines. Court Liaison This office coordinates efforts of school, court, and others in accomplishing system wide goals and objectives.  The liaison advises the court in all matters relating to school placements, regular and special programs, facilities, and special schools.

Home and Hospital Teaching Home and hospital teaching staff provide short term itinerant instruction to students with temporary conditions, including medical conditions and pregnancy. In addition, instruction is available to students with temporary emotional conditions that do not require special education but do require mental health treatment.

Office of Health Services This department promotes positive health habits and life styles. Health Services personnel assist with health problems that may interfere with learning, and they provide families with current health information for appropriate decision-making. The department acts as a liaison to community agencies related to health services. Health Services personnel provide students with necessary health services and medical care thereby enabling them to benefit from their educational environment. The department provides services through the staff comprised of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, health aides, and vision and hearing technicians.

Safe and Drug-Free Schools Office This office plans and implements a comprehensive, sequential substance abuse prevention curriculum from pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. They work with the community regarding violence and drug problems and provide training regarding drugs and violence. This office monitors school policy on the use, possession, and distribution of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. They assess the severity of students’ alcohol and drug involvement and refer to counseling and treatment, as needed. This office also collaborates with State, Regional, and County agencies regarding substance abuse issues and violence-related issues.
