PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

On Saturday, April 19th, the College Park Committee for a Better Environment came to Hollywood and planted trees and bushes and mulched a new pathway for students who walk towards Edgewood Rd.  It looks wonderful!  They greatly appreciated all the volunteers who were here to help.  I heard that it was a good turn out and we thank everyone who helped!

Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week!  Please ask your child about some special ideas that Mrs. Schickner and I told them about this week.  Our teachers are hard working and dedicated to making sure that every child is successful.  Now, is a great time to say thank you to them.  Don’t forget the specialists!  Mrs. Johnston includes every child in music programs and Ms. Carroll provides many fun games!  Students get lots of help from their ESOL teachers, reading teachers and special teachers.

Tuesday is Nurse’s Day!  Our nurse, Mrs. Righter, is a fully certified, registered nurse.  We greatly benefit from her knowledge of illness and medications.  She cares for our students, staff and parents.  Please be sure to thank her for her dedication.

On May 8th, we are having Mad Scientist Day.  The students will be involved in several science projects during the school day.  In the evening, we are inviting students to come to school with their families to do more science activities!  It will be at 6:30 in the gym and on the playground. You can come dressed up as a scientist. We hope that you will join us!

Several families have signed up for the Mobile Dentist on May 9th.  Mrs. Righter will let you know the details of that program.

We are very proud to announce that one of our ESOL teachers, Mr. William Hauswald, was named as one of the county’s Outstanding Educators!  The staff and students wrote letters to support his nomination and the committee recognized his excellent work!  He will be recognized at the school system’s Awards’ dinner on May 14th

Our student interns are finishing their work with us next week.  They have been an asset to our school and our students have benefited from having an additional teacher in the classroom.  We appreciate their hard work and wish them much success in their career!

The Fun Fair has been cancelled for this year.   The PTA was interested in having one this month but there were not enough volunteers to hold it.  There will be a PTA meeting on May 7th at 6:00.  We will discuss purchasing chairs for the school, a dinner night at Moe’s, and officers for next year.  If you are interested in being an officer next year, please let us know.  We will nominate officers and vote on them.  There will be no meeting in June.  We appreciate the support you have given the PTA this year and hope that you will continue to be involved!

On May 19th, we will have our final 2nd cup of coffee meeting with the counselor, Mrs. Westenburger, and the parent liaison, Mrs. Garrido.  We would like to thank parents for attending the sessions this year and discuss next year’s program.  Mrs. Schickner and I will be available for any questions about next year.  We hope that you will plan to come.

On May 22nd, the kindergarten classes will present a music program at 12:45.  Afterwards, they will receive their awards.

The evening of the 22nd, the 5th and 6th graders will have their annual dance at Berwyn Heights Fire House from 7-9PM.  The students have received information and permission slips for this event.  It is for our 5th and 6th grade students only.  Mrs. Schickner is organizing it and we appreciate all the parent volunteers we have heard from so far. Please note this is not a date dance! Every one will be going as friends!

Field Day is May 23rd.  Please be sure that your child is dressed for the activities.  It is important that they wear sneakers that day.  We also recommend that they bring a water bottle.  Please let Ms. Carroll know if you would like to volunteer to help on that day.

Please note that the last day of school was changed to Monday, June 9th

I have listed all the events for May and June to help you plan your calendars.  I know that parents want to attend and need to know ahead of time.  I hope this is helpful to you.  The classroom teachers will let you know of any other special activities that they may be planning for their class or grade level.

We are proud to announce a winner from our school in the county-wide contest Write-A-Book. Angelica Taylor in 6th grade has won Honorable Mention for her non-fiction story “There’s Always Hope”. The awards program will be held at Eleanor Roosevelt High School on May 4, at 5:00PM. Please come if you can cheer Angelica on when she receives her award.

Congratulations to Surya Radhakrishnan and Kingston Hears for winning the "Inspirational Teacher" essay contest!  Surya wrote about Mrs. Roberts, and Kingston wrote about Ms. Payne.  They enjoyed a wonderful McDonald's lunch together!
