Helpful Tips for Reading With Your Child

(Tips will be changed and updated periodically.  Check back for new information!)

  • Reading with your child should be a calm, positive time so that your child feels good about reading and it is an enjoyable time for all.

  • Establish a family time to read.  Sharing a book with the whole family can be a wonderful time together.  For some, reading before bedtime works well.

  • When reading with young children, point to the words as you read the title.  This helps them know you are reading the words and what the words are.  Discuss the picture on the cover.

  • There are lots of ways to share reading with your child:

  1. The adult reads the entire book to the child/children.

  2. The adult reads most of the words but stops at different points to let the child read a word the adult knows the child can read.

  3. The adult and child take turns reading.

  4. The child reads to the adult.

  • Talk about the pictures and events happening in the story.  Notice the characters, what they are doing, and how they are feeling.  Notice the problems and how they are solved.  Share what story events remind you of other information to which it connects.  The thinking and reacting that go with reading build understanding and makes reading more than word calling.  Reading becomes a wonderful sharing and learning time.

  • Talk to your older child about the chapter books he/she is reading.  Again, discuss the characters, actions, events, problems, and solutions, or true information known that connects to the book information.  Reading a chapter book together is a great family experience, too.
