Mission Statement

Youth with Purpose’s mentoring program mission is to provide opportunities for character building, rich cultural experiences, and educational achievement.  These opportunities are to encourage continued development and increased accountability.

 Program

Our program takes a pluralistic approach to building respect and dignity in our ninth grade students so that they can resist the negative influences around them and achieve the objectives of “No Child Left Behind” while successfully fulfilling the standards of graduation for Prince George’s County Public Schools.

In this yearlong program, over thirty-nine High Point High School administrators, teachers, and a media specialist serve as mentors to the twenty students active in the Youth with Purpose program to encourage improved behavioral, social, and academic skills.

Another important aspect of the Youth with Purpose program is the “Best Friend” component.  A “Best Friend” is a junior or senior student assigned to each youth to provide support and encourage responsible behavior. On the third Tuesday of each month, these “Best Friends” come together to socialize.  In addition to having peer mentors, participating faculty members also guide the students.

Parental involvement is extremely important and is encouraged during our monthly parent meeting.

The participants of Youth with Purpose meet every Tuesday after school in the school library.   We will offer a variety of activities.  These include:

Motivational speakers

Tutorials

Mini workshops on Success, Character building, Self-discipline,  and Etiquette

Role-playing on different kinds of etiquette for job-interviews and dining out

Movie discussion

Hands-on presentation on (Amazon Rain Forest and on raising and testing honeybees).

One weekend per month is set aside to provide cultural enrichment for the students.  Some of our weekend activities include  field trips to  performing art theaters and movie theaters, skating, international cuisine dinners, and to other special event arenas.

The Students participating in Youth with Purpose will be evaluated via a weekly progress report.

TUTORING FOR YOUTH WITH PURPOSE MEMBERS

All Youth With Purpose members are signed up to attend tutoring on Thursday in the Library Media Center at High Point.

Youth with Purpose Participants Define the Word "Success"
Success means...
To work hard, because anything worth having is worth working hard for- Tre

Success means many things but most of all, it means to never quit. Success is not something you gain with luck, but with hard work and determination.  Success is not just how much you have or where you work, it could be anything.  You can be successful in love, spirit, and in life.  Karina

...achieving your goals
...being the best you can be.
..never giving up and trying as hard as possible.     Kelsey

..to reach your goals and help others to reach theirs.  Derrick

..having the responsibility and willingness to accomplish your goals. Johanna

..achieving what you want in life regardless of the obstacles you must face in order to get there.  Lilah

...to achieve a goal that you have been trying to achieve for a long or short amount of time. Rochelle

...hard work and achieving your goals.  by Sean

Success is...the key to a better future.
...the key for much better friends.
...a comfortable life with all the things you wish.
...a very happy and proud family.
...happy kids (sons and daughters) who get everything they want and will be happy because you are happy.
Success makes you happy with who you are and with the better person you will become in the future.
 Lisbeth

Youth with Purpose socials will be held each third Tuesday of the month beginning February 21.
