Item 2: Program
Updates (Ms.Strayhorn)
Last year’s concerns are
addressed.
The number of certified
Montessori teachers: Actions taken:
Montessori teachers are recruited from the Montessori Institute,
Prince George’s County Human Resources director, Randy Thornton has
met with Dr. Shetley and he is working to have a reserve of
Montessori trained teachers. Also, Dr. Shetley is
meeting with Dr. Bruce Katz, coordinator
of University Partnerships, to develop a plan for collaborating with
local universities in order to produce a viable pool of Montessori
teachers for PGCPS.
Montessori Professional
Development: Actions taken:
New teachers received
professional development from county. New Montessori teachers
received a three day in-service prior to the beginning of the school
year. Selected Montessori teachers attended in-service at Henson
Valley Montessori on presenting the Montessori Great Lessons. It
was reported to be a positive experience. Also, in the beginning of
the school year, a Montessori consultant had an in-service for
primary para- professionals on the Montessori classroom climate.
Those in serviced have come back to their grade level and shared
information.
Montessori Curriculum:
Actions taken:
Montessori Curriculum was
aligned with the Maryland State Voluntary Curriculum. Montessori
manipulatives are the focus of instruction through Great Lessons.
Supplemental resources are the textbook and MSA Benchmarks.
Expansion of Program:
Actions taken:
John Hanson was included in the
county budget for a new wing. The new wing is slated for the French
Immersion program. The wing will release rooms and allow for
Montessori expansion as well.
Question:
Who determines that the wing will be slated for the French Immersion
program? Why are parents not given prior knowledge of expansion and
why aren’t parents involved with the process?
Response:
Ms. Briscoe is proposing to the principal to develop an adhoc
committee that will include parents and other school stake holders.
This committee with address the Expansion concerns. At this time
the expansion project is in the design stage.
Question:
Can you give an update on the progress of the Montessori Middle
School?
Response:
Middle School staff is included in the professional development and
certification update. (Ms. Strayhorn, Dr. Williams)
Item 3: Balanced
Score Card

initiative that outlines goals and measures for PGCPS,
Schools, Regions and departments will address performance based on
indicators as defined. Growth in time is priority. Robert Goddard
and John Hanson’s programs should mirror each other.
Item 4: 100th year
Montessori Celebration- May 4, 2006
Matthew Miller gave an over view
of the Montessori Celebration. The kick off activity will be Hands
across Montessori. All community members will make hands to be
place in the building. Each hand will be placed on the wall and
touching each other. It is the goal to have hands connected
throughout the building. Several projects will be done on each
grade level from now until May. The culminating event will be on
May 4, 2006. Parents are invited to attend committee meetings every
first Wednesday of the month at 4:00 p.m. in room 209.

involved in several exciting professional developments. The
in-services have served as a refresher for staff. February 28-
March 4, 2007 is the 100trhy year Montessori Celebration Convention
in New York. Montessori Staff from John Hanson will attend.
Parents are welcome to attend. Professional development through the
Barry School is upcoming. John Hanson is in the process of becoming

Question:
How is the testing drive in the county clashing with the Montessori
Philosophy?
Response:
Montessori instructors provide the grade level information germane
to the MSA through Great Lessons and additional information/skills
are presented in these lessons. (Ms. Strayhorn)
More information is requested
about classroom instruction milestones.
