PTSA POINTS
Special PTSA Meeting with Dr. Deasy
We were honored to have Dr. Deasy,
CEO and Superintendent of Prince George’s County Public
Schools, come to a special PTSA meeting on Tuesday, March 6,
2007. Dr. Deasy spoke on his vision on having small,
specialized schools and providing more educational choices
for our students and how we fit his vision. He indicated
that we demonstrated the benefits of his vision because of
the number of John Hanson parents that were in attendance to
hear him speak (We have almost 200 parents that night) and
how we appeared to be a close-knit school community. He is
also proposing to implement single gender-middle school with
more than one language, Community Contracts Schools, and AP
courses in all high schools. He informed us that he
advocated and received approval to provide additional
funding for our (2) schools. The additional funding will
allow us to have two (2) separate principals. He also told
us that he was aware of our other concerns with regards to
maintaining the integrity of our program and that he is
working to correct them. Unfortunately, the plans to add a
wing to our building will be postpone because he needs to
direct his attention to providing new schools in other areas
of the county. At the end of his speech, Harriett Richmond,
PTSA President, gave a Certificate of Appreciation to Dr.
Deasy for his support to our school. Although Dr. Deasy had
to leave early, he stayed to watch the John Hanson French
Immersion and Montessori School Dance Team and told one of
our parents that they did a wonderful job.
Ms. Janice
Briscoe, Assistant Superintendent for our school region,
answered additional school related questions. Mr. Steve
Martin, a representative for State Senator C. Anthony Muse
(District 26), also spoke at the meeting. He informed us
that Senator Muse is working hard for our school. Mr.
Martin reminded us that in FY 2009, students who do not pass
the HAS will not receive a GED/diploma and that Senator Muse
is looking to introducing a grade 13 for students who need
additional time and help to graduate from high school. Mr.
Martin informed us that Governor Martin O’Malley has
threatened to renege on his promises to fully fund the
Thornton Commission, to fund the Geographic Cost of
Education Index (GCEI), to increase school construction
funding to $400 million, and to address the shortage of
highly qualified teachers. He encouraged us to write
Senator Muse and his fellow legislatures and ask them to
hold Governor O’Malley’s feet to the fire to ensure that he
fulfill his campaign’s promises. Harriett Richmond, PTSA
President, promised to distribute a sample letter to all
parents.
