August 6, 2008 Greetings James Madison Students, Parents/Guardians: As the summer months quickly transition into the fall, I am excited and humbled to join the James Madison Middle School family as your new Principal. It has been a fast-paced, action-filled week since formally assuming the Principalship on Monday, July 28, 2008. During this time, I have heard wonderful accolades regarding the strengths of our teachers and staff, met with the Administrative team to discuss the academic and operational policies/procedures of the school, discussed the implementation of our PBIS school-wide discipline plan with staff members, and learned more about our International Baccalaureate program and its impact upon our school community. In addition, I have met with several team members of the Special Education, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Language Arts Departments. In our conversations, we began the initial team building process, staff members shared instructional practices implemented last school year, discussed clear expectations for the upcoming school year, reviewed concerns about our 2007-2008 Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) status, and processed staff concerns. As I join the team of educators here at James Madison, let me briefly share my educational background and values. Growing up in Williamsville, New York, I am the product of both private and public schools, am a graduate of Howard University’s School of Social Work, the University of the District of Columbia’s Master’s Degree Program in Counseling, and Trinity University’s Graduate Program in Educational Leadership. As an educator and administrator, I bring multiple experiences to the table. I have served as an administrator within the District of Columbia Public Schools on the Elementary and Middle School levels, taught 7th grade Mathematics within Prince George’s County Public Schools where I received the 2003 Maryland State Council of Mathematics Teacher of the Year Award for Middle School Teachers, represented Prince George’s County Public Schools as a 2003 Fulbright Memorial Fund Recipient where I toured various Japanese schools for three (3) weeks to learn about their educational system, and have served as Youth Specialist with the Northern Virginia Urban League ensuring that court-referred youth completed their adjudicated community service hours. We have the ultimate responsibility to model the way for the students we serve. Collectively, let us teach them, through our actions more so than our words, powerful lessons of: the power of choice, critical problem solving skills, the entrepreneurial spirit, the importance of integrity, and to be of service to others. Though we missed making our Adequate Yearly Progress this past school year, it will require work from all stakeholders: students, teachers, administrators, secretaries, guidance counselors, parents, guardians, and grandparents. Attendance is essential to a successful school year. Your child must come to school each day prepared to attend all classes. Parents, encourage your children to do all of their assignments to earn the necessary credits to advance to the ninth grade. In addition, positive behavior and attitude are also crucial to your child’s success. It is your child’s responsibility to wear his/her uniform daily, and students are expected to conduct themselves as responsible members of the James Madison Middle School community. Parents, hold your children accountable for their behavior and academic success! Our theme for this year is “Step Into Your Greatness.” It is a theme we believe will inspire our children to strive for excellence in all areas. Our Seventh Grade Orientation Program is on Thursday, August 21, 2008 for all incoming seventh graders. WE EXPECT OUR STUDENTS TO COME TO THE ORIENTATION IN SCHOOL UNIFORM! We encourage all parents/guardians to attend and meet your child’s teachers. Student/Parent Agenda books will be sold to students during the first week of school for $10.00. It is imperative that each student purchases an agenda book as it includes daily homework sheets and is used as a means of communication between teacher and parent. The agenda books will contain hall passes to be used when students want to leave class to go to the bathroom or any other place in the building. No one will be allowed out of class without a pass. The staff eagerly awaits your arrival at James Madison Middle School and pledges to do all it can to make this a most successful year for you.
