JMES Math Tips

Math Fun

Math is a very important part of life.  We use math to set an alarm clock, buy groceries, keep score or time at a game, wallpaper a room, or wrap a present.  We all need math in the world of computers and electronic communication.  It is important to encourage children to think of themselves as mathematicians who can reason and solve problems

Here are some things you can do:

THE GROUP GAME
Name things that come in groups of 2, 3, 4, 5, .....10, 12, etc.  For example, eggs come in groups of 12 (dozen).  Soda sometimes comes in groups of 6.  Shoes, socks and gloves come in groups of 2.

ESTIMATE AND ACTUAL
Estimate how long it takes to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, including gathering ingredients, preparation and clean-up.  Then find the actual time.

MYSTERY COIN
The mystery coin is...

  • larger than a penny
  • smaller than a dollar
  • larger than a nickel
  • smaller than a .50 piece
  • larger than a dime
What is it?

MYSTERY NUMBERS
1.  Find 8 numbers that fit these clues:

  •  The number is not even.
  •  The  sum, of the digits is not odd.
  •  The product of the digits is not even.
  • The number is between 1 and 35.
     What is it?

2.  This mystery number equals 20 centuries, 200 decades, or 1,999 + 1.  What is it?

OTHER ACTIVITIES
1.  Pick any news article or story.  Find all the math that you can in the article or story.

2.  Have your child act out a problem or draw a picture related to math.
