To empower our students to do their very best, the staff of Mary Harris “Mother” Jones needs your help. Since our instructional program is very rigorous, expect homework on a nightly basis, including Fridays. Also remember that silent reading and practicing with math flash cards are both important for students to do often. Our instructional program will be far more rewarding with your help. Another important way that you can help is attendance. It is important that your student be in school daily. Unexcused absenteeism, including extended trips out of the country, for whatever reason are not excused. The Parent Handbook that will be sent home on the first day of school identifies the legal reasons for absences, which are set by the state of Maryland. Last year, our attendance rate was 94.8%, with the state satisfactory standard set at 94%. This needs to be improved. Monthly letters will be sent home to students who are excessively late or tardy and report card grades will be affected. At Mary Harris “Mother” Jones Elementary, students are the most important people. We believe it is our responsibility to foster academic, social, physical and moral growth. The staff takes this enormous task very seriously and appreciates any and all communication with you.
Sincerely, Elizabeth Harriday Principal
