Mary Harris "Mother" Jones         Elementary School

La Escuela Elemental Mary Harris "Mother" Jones

Greetings to Mary Harris “Mother” Jones Students and Parents:

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Mother Jones if you are a new family.  I also would like to say ‘welcome back’ if you are returning.  My name is Elizabeth Harriday and I am the Principal of this wonderful school.

This school year will be very exciting and challenging.  It will be exciting because we are going to continue to implement the reading and math program that resulted in increased academic achievement for all students.  These academic programs also helped us attain English proficiency for our English language learners.  The school year will be challenging in terms of continuing our increased achievements in reading and mathematics and meeting all of our goals on the Maryland School Assessment.

To empower our students to do their very best, the staff of Mary Harris “Mother” Jones needs your help.   Since our instructional program is very rigorous, expect homework on a nightly basis, including Fridays.  Also remember that silent reading and practicing with math flash cards are both important for students to do often.  Our instructional program will be far more rewarding with your help.   Another important way that you can help is attendance.  It is important that your student be in school daily.    Unexcused absenteeism, including extended trips out of the country, for whatever reason are not excused.  The Parent Handbook that will be sent home on the first day of school identifies the legal reasons for absences, which are set by the state of Maryland.  Last year, our attendance rate was 94.8%, with the state satisfactory standard set at 94%.  This needs to be improved.  Monthly letters will be sent home to students who are excessively late or tardy and report card grades will be affected.

At Mary Harris “Mother” Jones Elementary, students are the most important people.  We believe it is our responsibility to foster academic, social, physical and moral growth.  The staff takes this enormous task very seriously and appreciates any and all communication with you.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Harriday
