Kettering Elementary School

School History and Profile

        
             Kettering Elementary is a Comprehensive School with enrollment of 449 students. 
 We offer the following core curriculum:  Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Technology.  Students in primary grades K-5 receive instruction in traditional self-contained classrooms.  Teachers implement daily instruction using block scheduling as follows:  K-1 instruction for reading in 150 minutes, Gr. 2-5 instruction for reading in 120 minutes.  Math instruction is 90 minutes for grades K-5. The instructional day begins at 7:45am and ends at 1:55pm.  All teachers implement the Voluntary State Curriculum (VSC) by using the aligned curriculum frameworks.

                Kettering Elementary School’s student population is predominately from the Kettering-Largo areas of Prince George’s County.  There are seventy-seven (77) students enrolled in full-day kindergarten; seventy-three  (73) students in first grade;  one hundred four (104) students in second grade, one hundred nineteen (119) students in third grade;  one hundred seven (107) students in fourth grade, one hundred twenty two (122) students in fifth grade; and one hundred fifty six (156) students in sixth grade.  This population is comprised of three hundred sixty-three (363) males and three hundred ninety-five (395) females.  The student teacher ratio is 28:1 in primary grades and 32:1 in the intermediate grades.   

                The professional staff is comprised of one (1) principal, one (1) vice-principal, 43 professional staff members of whom 27 are African-American and 16 are Caucasian.  Among the staff 27 teachers have advanced professional certificates, 8 have standard professional certificates and 8 have provisional certificates.  The number of faculty by years of teaching experience is: 8 teachers have 0-2 years, 5 teachers have 3-5 years, 4 teachers have 6-10 years, 3 have 11-15 years and 23 staff members have 16+ years.  The support staff consists of 22 members of whom 20 are African-American and 2 are Caucasian.   The support positions include 3 secretaries, 1 health aide, 1 building supervisor, 1 cafeteria manager, 4 instructional aides, 7 group activity assistants, 1 Before and After Care coordinator, and 4 cafeteria assistants.
