Library Media Specialist
Hours: School days from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm
Largo High School’s Library Media Center is a focal point of the school. Its goal is to facilitate higher order thinking
through the use of traditional resources and evolving technologies. The library media center staff provides a structured but
open student centered learning environment that will ensure that the lives of its patrons will be improved, enriched and
challenged as they prepare to become lifelong learners.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Curriculum: The Library Media Specialist provides instruction through a 9th grade orientation, lunchtime mini-lessons, one–on-one
instruction and research assistance. In addition teachers can schedule their classes for library skills instruction on various topics.
Circulation: All students and staff are encouraged to use the library media center and borrow materials. Students may check
out materials for two weeks. Materials can be renewed before the due date. Reference materials circulate overnight. All
circulated materials are checked out on an automated system. The catalog is on-line and can be accessed on any desktop
computer in the school. Students must have a current Student ID to borrow materials.
Fines and Charges: The following fines are levied when materials are returned late:
- Fiction and Non-fiction: Ten cents ($.10) per school day overdue
- Reference: Twenty-five cents ($.25) per school day overdue
- Lost Books: The replacement price of each book lost
The Catalog:
To access materials, students and staff should use the on-line automated catalog. The catalog is available on any desktop
computer in the school.
- Open the Internet → Click on Favorites and choose Library Media-OPAC
- Click on Largo High School and begin your search
Student Access to the Library Media Center:
When using the Library Media Center, students are expected to follow the Student Code of Conduct. No food or drink
is permitted. Talking must be kept at a minimum. Students should be focused and ready to work on their learning
activity/assignment.

During class time |
All students must have a pass from their classroom teacher and a current student ID. Passes from substitute teachers will not be accepted. |

During lunch time |
All students must get a pass from Mrs. Ray before 9:25 am of that day for their specific lunch time. |
Resources:
- Professional Library for staff
- Over 1, 000 educational videotapes including 360+ PBS videotapes
- Nine computers with MS Office, the Internet and the OPAC catalog
- Space to accommodate one class and one small group or 5-8 students doing research/ assignments
- Daily newspaper
- TVs and VCRs for borrowing on a daily basis
- LCD projector, cassette tape players/recorders, record players and overhead projectors for borrowing
- Filmstrip and slide projectors to borrow on a daily basis

All databases can be accessed at school and home. Click on the database name to use it.
