Summer 2008 College-Bound Program, at the University of Maryland College Park.
 It will be held Mondays through Thursdays, 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon, from Tuesday, July 1st, through Thursday, July 31st.
This program includes nine study skills workshops, visits to two lecture classes and important campus resources, and first-hand information from college students.

New Entries

The National Association of Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors awards scholarships to students who enroll in a full-time certificate or degree program with a major directly related to the p-h-c profession at either a two-year, four-year, or technical school or an apprenticeship program. Information is available online at www.foundation.phccweb.org/scholarships. The deadline is June 1, 2008.

The BigSun Organization is offering student athletes a $500 scholarship. All student athletes are eligible regardless of which sport they participate in. Applications are available online at www.bigsunathletics.com and are due by June 20, 2008.

Juniors Only: Applications are being accepted for the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Scholarship for those students graduating in 2009. Students selected for the program are awarded scholarships through a highly competitive national selection process and receive full tuition and other financial benefits at over 130 of the country’s leading colleges and universities. For more information visit www.nrotc.navy.mil.

Flow Ministries, Inc. is offering a $1000 scholarship to a young woman graduating from Prince George’s County Schools. Applicants must have at least a C+ average and clearly demonstrate academic potential, leadership qualities, be active in school and community based activities, and is college bound. Applications must be submitted by May 30, 2008.

The Automotive Hall of Fame is accepting applications for several scholarships for students who have a sincere interest in an automotive related career. Applications are available online at www.automotivehalloffame.org. Applications must be submitted by May 30, 2008.

The Ronald G. Williams, Jr. Foundation will award a $1000 scholarship to a student who has at least a 2.5GPA and plans to major in criminal justice. An additional scholarship, the Ron and Cora Lee Children of Law Enforcement Officers, is available to students who have a parent/guardian that is currently working for or retired from a law enforcement agency. Applications are available online at www.thergwfoundation.org and must be postmarked by May 31, 2008.

The Ameen F. Rihani Scholarship Program valued at $1500 is accepting applications from students who are of Lebanese or other Arab descent and have at least a 3.25 GPA. Students must have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular activities, or other activities. Applications are available online at www.ameenrihani.org and must be postmarked by May 31, 2008.

Applications are being accepted for the Elder Theodore L. Barber Scholarship Foundation, Inc. Students must have at least a 2.5 GPA; submit two letters of recommendation and a maximum 300-word essay. Applications are available in the career center and must be submitted by May 31, 2008.

Making it Count will offer one national $5000 scholarship and five regional $1000 scholarships to seniors who have participated in the Making College and Career Count presentation and who can exhibit excellence based on the “Winning Characteristics” highlighted in the program. Mark Robbins, Dean of Syracuse U. School of Architecture is seeking young men and women of color interested in pursuing a five year professional degree in architecture. Scholarship money has been set aside to fully cover the cost for ten students. For more information contact Mark Robbins, 315-443-2255.

Duke U. has announced that parents whose incomes total $60,000 or less no longer have to contribute financially to their child’s education. For families with incomes of $40,000 or less student loans have been eliminated and loans have been reduced for families with incomes up to $100,000. All merit scholarships now provide full tuition, room, board, and fees.

The JBJ Livable Communities and Education Research Foundation will award scholarships to seniors based on financial need and scholastic ability. Applications are available online at www.jbjfoundation.org and must be submitted by June 1, 2008.

Earn $1000 a month while still in high school.  Enlist in the Army today and you could start earning $1000 every month and a $1000 HS graduation bonus.  Add the money above to an enlistment bonus (up to $40,000) plus up to $73,836 for education through the Army College Fund and Montgomery GI Bill.  For more information contact your local recruiter, Staff Sgt. The Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund offers scholarships to students who have at least a 3.0 GPA, have a combined score of 1100 on the SAT, and who have been accepted to a participating college or university.  To be considered for a scholarship, students must contact the participating school’s scholarship coordinator and submit an application to them.  More information is available on the web at www.thurgoodmarshallfund.org

Towson U. is accepting applications for the CEEP (Community Enrichment and Enhancement Partnership) Award which offers students $1000 to $4000 per year in scholarship funds.  Students must have at least a 2.5 GPA and have demonstrated leadership qualities and community involvement.  Applications are available online at www.towson.edu/diversity and click on “GRANTS.”     

The Cosmetology Program at Harmon’s Beauty School located in Landover, MD is offering a partial tuition scholarship up to $2,000 based on merit, need, and ethnicity.  For additional information see Mrs. Collins-Swain.  Enrollment applications are available online at www.harmonsbeautyschool.com

Making It Count will offer one national, $5000 and five regional, $1000 one-time award scholarships to high school seniors who have participated in the Making College and Career Count presentation between January 1-June 13, 2008 and who can exhibit excellence based on the “winning characteristics” highlighted in the program.  For more information on the scholarship or to download the application, visit www.makingitcount.com/scholarship.  Applications will be available after January 1, 2008.  The presentation at LHS is scheduled for January 15, 2008. 

Certain students under the age of 21 who have resided in a foster care home in Maryland and plan to attend a Maryland public college or university are eligible for the foster care tuition waiver.  The waiver does not apply to room and board.  More information is available at www.mhec.state.md.us

Kettering University is offering more than $3 million in scholarship funds to students who are interested in engineering, math and science, or technology related business.  Fore more information contact the admissions office at admissions.kettering.edu. 

The Army ROTC Four-year Scholarship is available to all high school seniors.  Students receive full tuition and fees or room and board, a monthly stipend, and $900 toward books.  Students must have at least a 2.5 GPA, a minimum score of 920 on the SAT or 19 on the ACT, meet physical standards, and agree to accept a commission and serve in the Army on active duty or in a reserve component.  For more information go to www.goarmy.com/rotc/high_school_students.jsp

The Washington Area Joint Apprenticeship Committee’s electrical apprenticeship program is looking for those students with an aptitude for math and science.  Apprentices select a three or five year program and earn pay and benefits while in class and during supervised on the job training.  Apprentices can earn from $41,000 to $73,000 per year.  Information can be found online at www.electricalalliance.org.  Classes begin in July/August and applications must be received by April 2008.  Additionally, contractors are always looking for truck drivers and warehouse workers as well as various other positions.   

The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill has announced a plan to expand the Carolina Covenant, a program that enables low-income students to attend UNC debt-free.  Admitted students with a family income at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level can attend UNC if they work 10-12 hours a week in a federal work-study job.  To learn more, visit www.unc.edu/carolinacovenant

Westminster College is offering scholarship opportunities for students who have at least a 3.0 GPA.  Students can receive up to $18,000 a year for the scholarship.  To be considered for the scholarships, submit an application for admission to the Office of Admissions. 

The Christian Connector provides a free Christian college information service as well as a $2500 Christian scholarship drawing.  Students can log onto www.christianconnector.com to request information and automatically be entered in the scholarship drawing. 

The College of New Jersey is offering merit scholarships ranging from $1000 to $8000 to out-of-state students.  Eligible students must be in the top 15% of their class and a have a combined critical reading and math SAT score of 1300 or better.  Students can visit www.admissions.tcnj.edu for more information.   

CampusDoor is awarding one hundred $1000 scholarships throughout the 2007 school year.  Students can apply online at http://campusdoor.com/scholarship.  You can apply online beginning November 1, 2007.     

Receive up to $128,000 over four years for the Roanoke College Scholars Program.  For more information or to apply visit www.roanoke.edu/scholars.        

SunTrust Bank if offering the 2007-2008 Off to College Scholarship Sweepstakes for seniors.  Students can win a $1000 scholarship.  One winner will be chosen every two weeks from October 31, 2007 through May 15, 2008.  Students can begin registering September 14, 2007.  For complete details visit www.offtocollege.info or www.suntrusteducation.com.  

The United States Marine Corps is offering the Marine Option Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Four Year Scholarship Program.  Students with a minimum of 1000 on the SAT and have at least a 3.3 are encouraged to apply.  Applications and more information are available online at www.marines.com.

Announcements/Job Opportunities    

Year Up is a program that allows graduates ages 18-24 to earn 18 college credits and a weekly stipend, learn technical and professional skills, and be placed in apprenticeships. Over 90% of graduates are employed with salaries averaging above $35,000 per year. During the first half of the year students focus on technical skill mastery in the area of help desk and desktop support and during the second half students are placed in paid apprenticeships with local partner companies. Classes begin in September and March. Applications and information is available at www.yearup.org. If you are unsure of what you want to do or have not decided on what you want to do after graduation, this is a great opportunity.

Patuxent Research Refuge is sponsoring a summer Youth Conservation Corps Program for students between the ages of 15-18 and who have a strong interest in outdoor work and natural resources management. For more information visit www.patuxent.fws.gov or call 301-776-3090.

Friends of the National Zoo offers a variety of summer opportunities through the Teen Volunteer Program. Positions range from Class Aide, Senior Class Aide, Kids Farm, Horticulture, and Exhibit Greeter. There are also paid positions available: food service cashier, gift shop salesclerk, traffic aide, information aide, grounds person, parking cashier, and birthday party aide. The City of Laurel is accepting applications for part-time and seasonal positions throughout Laurel. Applications are available at the City of Laurel Personnel Dept at 8103 Sandy Spring Rd, the Laurel Community Center on Cypress St and the Phelps Sr. Citizen Center on Montgomery St. Information is also available in the guidance office.

The College of Engineering and Mineral Resources (CEMR) at West Virginia University is looking for highly qualified students with an interest in engineering or computer science.  If interested please see Mrs. Collins-Swain ASAP. 

The Robert Ross International University of Nursing in St. Kitts has partnered with accredited U.S. nursing schools to offer the associate and bachelors degrees in nursing.  The school admits students three times per year; January, May and September.  For more information visit the website at www.iuon.org

The Washington, D.C. Joint Plumbing Apprenticeship Committee is accepting applications for the Apprenticeship Program the first Tuesday of each month beginning at 1:30.  Applications must be made in person at 8509 Ardmore-Ardwick Road, Landover, MD.  Students must bring a transcript, copy of birth certificate or two forms of ID with the birth date.  For questions please contact the office at 301-322-8810. 

The T.
