SAT Fee Waivers

SAT fee waivers are available for high school juniors or seniors in the United States, Puerto Rico, or U.S. territories who cannot afford to pay the test fees. See your counselor to request fee-waiver cards.

Fee-Waiver Cards

  • Cover the basic test fees for SAT or SAT Subject Tests™

  • Cover either the Question-and-Answer Service (QAS) or the Student Answer Service (SAS) (if you select these services when you register)

  • May qualify you for application fee waivers at many colleges, if the institution has agreed to cooperate with the SAT Program Fee Waiver Service.

Only your counselor can grant you a fee-waiver card. Fee Waivers are not available through the College Board.

Note: You must register by the regular registration deadline. Fee waivers cannot be used for late registration except for the October test date. Fee waivers cannot be used for standby registrations.

Eligibility

You are eligible for consideration for fee waivers if you are:

  • an American citizen or a foreign national testing in the United States, Puerto Rico, or United States territories; or

  • an American citizen living outside the United States; and

  • you meet the financial eligibility guidelines for fee waivers, such as participating in the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch/National School Lunch Program at your school. Your guidance counselor will share and additional eligibility guidelines with you.

If you are a homeschooled student in the United States, Puerto Rico, or U.S. territories who cannot afford to pay the test fees, you must provide proof of eligibility to your local high school or agency fee-waiver administrator/counselor. Only a school or agency counselor can provide you with the fee-waiver card for the appropriate test. If you qualify for an SAT fee waiver, you can also receive up to four Request for Waiver of College Application Fee forms to request application waivers from higher education institutions.

Registering with Fee Waivers

If you are eligible, you are entitled to use fee waivers to cover the cost of two SAT Reasoning Test registrations and two Subject Test registrations (for a maximum of six Subject Tests). Fee waiver cards are specific to the type of test you select when registering. Be sure to use the card that matches the test you select.

  • Online Registration

If you wish to register online and are eligible, your counselor will give you a fee-waiver card. This card will have a 12-digit number on it. The first six characters will be handwritten by your counselor; the other six are the preprinted fee-waiver identification number. Together, these numbers make up your fee-waiver code. When you are asked to enter your fee-waiver code during online registration, enter the entire 12-digit code. This code can only be used once. 2006-07 fee-waiver cards can be used for online registration through August 13, 2007.

  • Mail Registration

To register by mail using a fee waiver, obtain an SAT Registration Booklet along with a signed fee-waiver card from your counselor. Make sure the information on your fee-waiver card is complete, with all necessary signatures; you cannot register for the test without a completed card. Mail the entire fee-waiver card in the same envelope as your completed Registration Form by the regular registration deadline. Your Registration Form will be returned to you if the fee-waiver card is missing or improperly completed, and your registration will be delayed.

Waiving College Application Fees

If you use SAT Reasoning Test or SAT Subject Test fee waivers and plan to enter college in fall of 2007 you are eligible to receive up to four Request for Waiver of College Application Fee forms from your counselor. These forms notify participating colleges that you have participated in the SAT Program Fee-Waiver Service and request that they consider waiving their application fees. To use a form, first make sure the college will accept it, then mail the completed, signed form with your college application.

To find out if the college/university of your choice has agreed to consider waiving the application fee, check the 2006-07 Directory of Colleges Cooperating with the SAT® Program Fee-Waiver Service (.pdf/1.54MB). Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader (latest version recommended).

Note: An institution listed in the directory is not obligated to waive its application fee for every fee-waiver user who applies. Please speak to the admissions staff at each institution before enclosing the form with your application.

Notice
Fee waivers are not accepted for late or standby registrations.

Fee Waiver Tips

  • You can receive up to four fee waiver cards (two for the SAT, two for Subject Tests) to cover both your junior and senior years. Fee Waivers cover the test fee only. Each Subject Test fee waiver card covers up to three Subject Tests for each registration.
  • Whether you used fee waiver cards during your junior or senior year, you should qualify to waive up to four college application fees.
