This course fulfills the English 9 requirement and is designed to facilitate learning outcomes appropriate to the instructional needs of students who can benefit from strategies based on individual learning styles and needs. The general education teacher will teach this class in collaboration with a special educator in order to ensure that all students have access to the English 9 curriculum (see English 9 above). The Kurzweil Text Reader Software may be utilized by students with special needs.

In the work component of the Diversified Occupational Issues course (formerly Vocational Development), students engage in work-based learning experiences related to their career interests and capabilities and are encouraged to learn all aspects of the industry. Job experiences promote mastery of skills needed for entry-level employment in the student’s declared occupational area of interest. The Work Study/Transition Coordinator, employer, student, teachers, counselor and parents collaborate in designing and implementing activities related to academic, vocational, and technological skill development for successful employment.  Textbook(s): None

Health Issues/Phys Ed-Sp
Health Issues

This semester course deals with the basic principles of physical, mental, social, intellectual, and spiritual health. The importance of developing and implementing behaviors that are conducive to a lifetime of good health is stressed. Key areas of focus are: safety and first aid including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training; nutrition and fitness including dietary factors for high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity; family life and human sexuality; disease prevention and control including sexually transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS and cancer; drug and alcohol abuse prevention with an emphasis on coping with peer pressure and choosing not to use drugs; mental health including decision making, stress reduction and suicide prevention; and personal and consumer health. The family life and human sexuality unit requires prior written parental permission. All students are required to complete the Health Issues course to satisfy the half credit graduation requirement. Team Sports 1

This semester course will consist of three activities and will provide learning experiences in team sports such as flag football, soccer and basketball. Opportunities for leadership skills are developed through organizing, administering and officiating intra-class competitions. Emphasis is placed on the development of high degrees of competency through the mastery of more complex movement. The work component allows students to participate in paid or unpaid work-based learning opportunities where they are able to put into practice the course content and academic skills they have learned in the classroom.
