Dear Parents,

Progress reports were distributed on Thursday, 9/27/07.  If your child received a progress report, please sign a copy and return it to your child’s teacher.  It is also important to discuss the report with your child and design a plan for improvement. An appointment or telephone conference with the teacher will help identify the reasons for the progress report.  There is still time to improve a grade.  Next week, the children in grades 3 – 6 will participate in benchmark tests.  These tests are reviewed carefully as they help us prepare for the MSA in April.  Teachers are required to deliver rigorous instruction that challenges the children.  In turn, the students must complete their class work and homework in order to practice the skills taught.  We ask that you examine their agenda book nightly and sign it to indicate that the homework was completed and reviewed.  Also, review class work with your child and talk with them about the assignments. The more conversations the students have about their assignments, the more conscientious they will be when completing them.

Operating Budget Public Hearing for FY 2009 – Dr. John Deasy and James Beall, Chief Financial Officer, will host a public hearing tonight, Oct.1, at Dr. Henry Wise High School for parents and the community on the proposed FY2009 school system operating budget.  All interested in speaking at the hearing should call 301-952-6382 before 4:00 p.m. on Monday, October 1, to register.  Each speaker will be given two minutes to express their views.

ProKids Show – On Tuesday, 10/2, parents and children are invited to attend the ProKids Character Building Show at 7:00 p.m. in the multipurpose room.  The ProKids show blends humor, puppets, magic and music to exclaim the message of good character.  The cost of the program is free to members of the PTA.  All are invited and encouraged to join the PTA for $7.00 or non-members may pay $5.00 to attend. The students will enjoy a ProKids program during the school day.  However, the evening performance is a different, family oriented show.

PTA General Meeting – There will be a general meeting on Tuesday, 10/2 at 6:30 p.m. in the multipurpose room.  The purpose of the meeting is to vote on the 2007-2008 budget, which accompanies the newsletter.  Please review the budget in advance of the meeting in order to be prepared for the vote.

Sally Foster Fundraiser – Seventy-one fundraiser envelopes were turned into school.  Fundraiser items will be delivered on Tuesday, 10/2.  Children will carry home the smaller orders.  Larger orders will need to be picked up by parents. Parents can pick up the items in the office after school and before the ProKids show until 6:45 p.m.

HSA Exam – Sixth grade students received a large index card from the Maryland State Department of Education.  HSAexam.org is a website to learn about the high school exams.

OLSAT Testing – Students in the third grade will complete the OLSAT on Tuesday, 10/2.  Make sure the students get a good night’s sleep and have a good breakfast.  On time arrival is critical as the assessment will begin immediately after morning announcements.

Dr. Deasy Meeting – Please join Dr. John Deasy, Superintendent, for his State of the System address on Tuesday, October 9, 2007, at 7:00 p.m. at Dr. Henry Wise High School.

McDonald’s Night – Families are invited to join various staff members for dinner on Tuesday, 10/9/07 from 5:00 -8:00 p.m. at the McDonald’s in the Marlton Shopping Plaza.  McDonald’s donates 10% of the profits from that time period to our school.  The last McDonald’s night was in May and the school received $193.59!  This is a wonderful opportunity to meet your neighbors, visit with staff, and enjoy your dinner!

Benchmark Testing – Students in grades 3-6 will complete benchmark assessments in reading and math on Tuesday 10/9/07 and Wednesday 10/10/07.  The assessments cover the concepts taught during the first quarter.  It is important for students to participate in class, complete their class work and homework in order to be ready for the assessments.

Community Meeting  A community meeting will be held on Wednesday, 10/15/07, 7:00 p.m. at Dr. Henry Wise High School.  The purpose of the meeting is to solicit parent input regarding the new PreK-grade 8 proposal.  This should be an interesting dialogue as parents express their views of this innovative proposal and share their suggestions.

First in Math – Students in grades 3 – 6 have been encouraged to visit the First in Math website to complete problem solving activities.  All students that accrue 900 First in Math stickers by Friday, 10/12, will enjoy lunch with the principal and a special treat on Monday, 10/15.  This is a fun way for students to practice their math skills and share their strategies with classmates.

Attendance and On Time Arrival – A high percentage of daily attendance and on time arrival is important to a child’s success in school. The school communication system alerts parents to absences and tardy arrivals and reminds parents of the importance of sending a note to school upon the child’s return.  Our PPW, Ms. Pat Tuck, and our parent liaison, Ms. Gladys Scales, have been contacting parents to discuss absences.  Students with two or less days of absence and tardy days will participate in a celebration at the end of each quarter.  Encourage your child’s attendance and make sure they arrive at school before 7:45 a.m.

Book Fair – The PTA will sponsor a book fair between October 22 and 26.  Many volunteers are needed to organize a successful and smooth operating book fair.  The class that has the most volunteer parents will receive a cupcake party.  Contact Aricka Hawkins, 301-466-4304 or Kathy Yorkshire, 301-254-1443, to volunteer your time or email the PTA at marltonpta@yahoo.com

Blood Drive at Marlton Elementary School – October 23, 2007 – 3-7:30 p.m.  Flyers are

being sent home today.  Students whose parents sign up for the blood drive will receive a token from the Red Cross.   If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Bishop, school nurse,

at 301 952-0602.

Chess Club – Upper Marlboro Library – First and Third Thursdays at 5:30 p.m.  Come learn how to play and have fun with friends and family.  All ages welcome.
