  • Dr. Deasy Visit – On March 3, Dr. John Deasy, Superintendent, visited Marlton to kick off Read Across America.  Dr. Deasy toured the school and read, Oh, The Places You’ll Go, by Dr. Seuss to Ms. Clayton’s class and Ms. Wilson-Smith’s class.  In addition, he spoke with many first graders as they ate lunch in the cafeteria.  He was most gracious and commented on how respectful the children were.  It was an exciting day and we hope he visits again soon.

  • Marlboro Boys & Girls Club – It’s time to sign up for Babe Ruth T-ball/rookie leagues.  To sign up or learn more about the league, contact Mr. Bossett, 301-655-5910 or Ms. Ann, 202-215-9119.  Practice begins on March 31.  The season lasts from 5/10 to 6/21.

  • Pennies for Patients – Nurse Bishop is proud to announce that the students raised $2,866.35 for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Foundation.  The two classes that raised the most money were Ms. Sollers, $482.83, and Ms. Gutierrez, $411.79.  Both classes will enjoy a pizza party.  Congratulations and thank you to everyone that participated.

  • Black History Play – Mark your calendar for Wednesday, March 12 at 7:00 p.m., to attend the musical production, “Motown, One Man’s Dream”.  The students of Marlton Elementary, under the direction of Gary Seddon, will share the history of Motown and Barry Gordy.  We are extremely proud of their talents and dedication to musical theater.  Bring your family and neighbors for an evening of entertainment.  Afterwards, refreshments will be sold to help defray the cost of the production.  We invite parents to donate a roll of paper towels to the Christmas in April Project and bring the roll to the Black History Play.  This demonstration of your commitment to community service will inspire the children.

  • Jump Rope for Heart – Get ready for Jump Rose for Heart.  Jump Rope for Heart is a very special community service program to raise funds for the American Heart Association.  We’re joining the fight against cardiovascular disease and stroke.  Marlton raised over $5,000 last year and our goal this year is $7,000!  The event will take place on Feb. 28 and 29 from 8:15 – 10:15. We will need lots of volunteers on each of these days to make the event a success. We are having an assembly on Feb. 15th about what JUMP ROPE FOR HEART is all about and they will get permission slips that day.  They are required to bring in a permission slip and $5.00 to participate which is due on Feb. 27, the days before we jump.  The event itself is Feb. 28th and 29th from 8:10 to 10:30 in the morning.  The 28th grades 1-3 will jump and on the 29th grades 4-6 will jump.  We are having music provided by the Peer Mediation Program at Douglas, cookies from Subway, door prizes, a poster contest, and a double dutch or long jump contest.  The classroom that raises the most money will have a pizza party.  Donations can be made out in a check to American Heart Association or donated on line. Look for more details in the next Marlton newsletter.

  • Lions Club Canned Food Drive – The Lions Club extends their gratitude to the parents, children and staff at Marlton Elementary for their generosity.  During the canned food drive, our donation weighed 681 pounds.  Ms. Pica challenged the school to donate 400 pounds of food, which they donated quickly.  So, the challenged was raised to 600 pounds and the school responded!  As you recall, all donations were distributed to needy families in the Brandywine/Upper Marlboro area.  The Lions Club included fresh vegetables and a turkey for each family.

  • Canned Food Drive – The Lions’ Club donated $500 to Marlton Elementary School and many other schools in the Brandywine/Upper Marlboro area.  We thank them for their generosity and the money will be used to purchase a document camera for classroom usage.  The Lions’ Club has asked the generous parents, students and staff to participate in their food drive.  The Lions’ Club will distribute the food to families in the Upper Marlboro/Brandywine area.  In addition to the nonperishable foods collected, the Lions’ Club will add a turkey, fresh vegetables, milk and bread to the basket.  Think how happy the families will be when they receive this fabulous basket of food.  Last year, you were extremely generous and the office was overflowing with canned goods.  From now until winter break, we ask that you send in your donations.  Knowing our donations will remain in our area will help us see the benefits of our generosity.
  • Attendance Handbook – Accompanying the newsletter is the attendance handbook, Be Cool – go to school!  YES.  The handbook explains the importance of regular attendance, reasons for lawful absences, and ways to help your child have better attendance.  Please review the handbook carefully to learn more about the attendance policy. Our parent liaison will continue to contact parents of children with excessive absences or tardy arrivals to discuss ways to improve student attendance.
  • Family Math Night – A special thank you to Ms. Rosenau, math EC, and the teachers for developing and organizing this activity.  Sixty-two families made math board games on Dec. 4.  Together the families can have fun practicing math concepts at home.
  • First in Math/Challenge 24 – Congratulations to the following students for reaching the goal of 1,500 stickers during the “catch up” round.  Well done, William Shaw, Corey Dorsey, Marcellus Major, Mia Rhinehart, Joseph Lagnese, Brian Williams, Dazha Austin, Joseph Butler, Ishmail Harris, Devon Francis and Michaela Scott.  We celebrated at lunch with “ketchup” and fries.  More students need to participate in this activity. The research indicates that students that engage in the First in Math activities increase their achievement on standardized assessments.  This is due to the level of problem solving activities completed on this online program. Encourage your child to visit the site regularly.  You will be pleased with the challenging exercises.  The next goal is for students to reach 2000 stickers by Jan. 14.  Those that reach the goal will enjoy a “round” lunch with the principal.

  • American Education Week – We had over 80 parent/grandparents visit their child’s class during visitation day on November 14.  This year’s theme was “Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility.”  Thank you for your participation.  We look forward to seeing you throughout the school year.  Stop the office and obtain a visitor’s pass and proceed to the classroom.

  • Holiday Shop - The PTA is sponsoring a “holiday shop” December 10, 11, and 12 for the children to do some family shopping.   On Wednesday, December 12 the shop will be open until 7:30 p.m.  This will be held in the library.

  • ExxonMobil  - Thanks to the efforts of Samrish Singh, of the ExxonMobil station at 7625 Crane Highway, Route 301, Upper Marlboro, Marlton Elementary School has been awarded a $500 ExxonMobil Educational Alliance grant for our technology program. • Family Math Night – Ms. Rosenau, math teacher, and the staff cordially invite you to join us for Family Math Night on Tuesday, December 4 from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.  The activity will focus on Making Math Board Games.  Competition increases an individual’s enthusiasm for meeting the challenge and winning. Therefore, students will work harder to memorize their math facts or understand concepts to beat their opponent.  After the games are made, students can play them with their family or friends.  Join us for a game night that will help your child improve their math skills. Please complete the math night attendance form and return it by November 28 in order for materials to be ordered.  To help parents eliminate the dinner rush, the PTA will sell pizza, $1.00 per slice, soda/water, $ .75, and chips $ .50, beginning at 6:30 p.m.  Complete the dinner order form and return it to school by the morning of December 3.

  • First in Math – Our first challenge has been completed and the following fourth and fifth grade students reached the goal (or more) of 708 sticker points: Corey Dorsey, Devon Francis, Whitney Hall, Devin Barksdale, Joseph Lagnese, Steven Newman, and Mia Rhinehart.  The students enjoyed lunch with the principal and were treated to homemade sundaes.  We are completing the process to allow students in third and sixth grade to visit the site.  Our next challenge is for students to reach 900 sticker points by October 11.  First in Math, challenge 24, requires students to complete problem solving activities.  It also reinforces multiplication skills.  Encourage your child to visit the site and work toward reaching the goal.

  • Book Fair – The PTA will sponsor a book fair between October 22 and 26.  In addition to the day time shopping, the book fair will be open on Wednesday and Friday evenings 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.  Many volunteers are needed to organize a successful and smooth operating book fair.  The class that has the most volunteer parents will receive a cupcake party.  Contact Aricka Hawkins, 301-466-4304 or Kathy Yorkshire, 301-254-1443, to volunteer your time or email the PTA at marltonpta@yahoo.com
