Women Make a Difference

On November 13, 2009 the Women of Thurgood Marshall Middle School showed that they can make a difference. They celebrated Women make a difference day with an assembly, classes and several guest speakers. Johanna Williams was the martial arts teacher that taught the girls how to defend themselves. Nearly 400 middle school girls learned about manners and self confidence. Our keynote speaker, Dr. Bias talked to the girls about making good decisions (Caption by Student writer, D. Vera)

Books Come AliveOn October 23, 2009 the teachers from Thurgood Marshall dressed like their favorite book characters and authors in order to read to the students. The students were thrilled with the readings and the many costumes that brought the characters to life. Reading and education are the keys to success and we want to make sure that our students make that connection. Thank you Ms. Barnes for spearheading this event (Caption by Student U.N.).

Men Make A Difference

George Washington University Field Trip

On October 21, 2009, our Thurgood Marshall students got a taste of College life at George Washington University. The students were given a tour of the campus and they learned a lot about college life. After the "college visit" the students and staff decided to explore a few of the more popular monuments in the District. These college field trips are an effort to expose our students to what is expected and required of them in order to be college bound. (Caption by Mr. Navas).

25 Book Campaign

On September 24th, 2009, TMMS ( Thurgood Marshall Middle School) kicked off their 25 book campaign and showed there tiger spirit. TMMS is an "America Choice School" and they challenge each scholar to read at least 25 books. The celebration included fun activities like readings from the mighty scholars and teachers, door contests and a Pep Rally. We also had a surprise visit from our former 8th grade administrator, Mr. Goins. (Caption by Alvin Deskins).

Tigers At Howard University!

Today 9/16/09 the Thurgood Marshall Middle School (TMMS) scholars took their first field trip to Howard University. It was a success! They had a wonderful time and got to see what it was like to go to a college. The TMMS scholars got to eat at the university cafeteria, see how life is on campus, and see college students studying (2nd row 3rd picture). They also got a chance to listen to ideas of what they can  study when they get to college. We hope to have more scholars from TMMS attend more fantastic trips like this (Caption by Kayla Williams).

The Scientific Minds of Mr. Clow's class

Mr. Kow inspires his students to learn science at Thurgood Marshall Middle School. On the first day of school his students put on their scientific engineering hats and built structures out of plastic straws. The students quickly figured out that this was not an ordinary science class and curiosity filled the room with questions, thoughtful insight and energy. "What are we going to do Next?" asked 8th grade student Dillon Suttle. Mr. Kow showed the students how the chemicals, in a simple product like nail polish, would react to fire and oxygen. All eyes were on Mr. Kow as he performed his next magic trick. He wrapped up the lesson with feedback and a few questions of his own. Caption by Mr. Navas (Media Specialist)
