As of June 8, 2009, Prince Georges County currently has 33 confirmed cases of novel influenza A (H1N1). Of theses 33 cases, 26 are in some manner associated with Prince Georges County Public Schools (PGCPS). The majority of cases are in school children between the ages of 5 and 17 years old. The Prince George's County Health Department and the Prince George's County Public Schools System have been working together to monitor the situation. College Field Trip - Ohio State & Ohio Wesleyan

Thurgood Marshall students have been visiting different colleges all year. On this particular trip, alumni - Ms. Rebecca Castle and Mr. Ben Owen - bragged about their alma maters - Ohio State and Ohio Wesleyan Universities. Other chaperones (Ms. Crandall, Mr. Goins and Mr. Clay) said the experience was great. Thurgood Marshall student, Peter Boswell, was quoted as saying, "This trip let me see what college life is really like." The students attended classes, visited dorm rooms, and even found time to enjoy a good meal at a nice Italian restaurant.

Marshall Student donates to Locks of Love

Thurgood Marshall student Melissa Martinez performed a very heartfelt gesture by donating her hair to "Locks of Love." Melissa said "it just seems like the right thing to do." Melissa is in the seventh grade but she is definitely wise and mature beyond her years. Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Locks of Love uses donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses we provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.

This is a summer program that allows our rising 9th graders to become oriented about the high school setting, preview the English and math curriculum, explore college and career opportunities and much more. Malik Butts Honored at Write-A-Book Contest
On May 3, 2009 Prince Georges County held its annual "Write-A-Book" awards ceremony. Our very own Malik Butts took second place in the graphic novel competition. This is a great accomplishment when you consider that every student in the Prince Georges County was eligible but as they say, "The Cream always rises to the top."  Malik's comic book was titled, "Senior Butts versus Magical Master." Congratulations Malik and we look forward to your next novel (Caption by Mr. Navas 5/6/2009).
Raul NavasWhy I Love Teaching: I love teaching because it's challenging, there is never a dull moment, and every day brings something new. In the media center, my challenge is to teach students and teachers on every level and in every subject area. From the latest in green screen technology to basic arithmetic,  teaching is a continuous adventure and I love it. Teacher of the Month

Accomplishments: Mr. Navas is a member of the Prince Georges County Library Media Support Team, which conducts monthly briefings on the latest trends in Library Science to more than 20 Media Specialists from Zone 5. He is also a member of the Thurgood Marshall Leadership Team and is in charge of "Tiger TV,” which is used to teach lessons, relay current events, and convey educational television programming. In addition, Raul leads the school’s Write a Book and yearbook clubs, and maintains the school's Web site

Career Day was very successful

Career day proved to be very successful, Thurgood Marshall welcomed over 70 special guests speakers to educate our students about the many career options they could strive for. There were firefighters, architects, doctors, professors and nurses...just to name a few. The speakers were escorted by our top students and got to have "one on one" contact with the classes they were assigned to. Antonio Morrell (student) even said, " Today inspired me to work harder at my studies in order get a great job." "Career day was definitely a mission accomplished," says Olivia Byrd.

Scholar Wins Carson Scholarship
One of our esteemed 8th grade scholars, Ravenn Mathis, just received a prestigious scholarship from the Carson's Scholars Foundation. She was handpicked out of a competitive pool of talented scholars from all around the United States. Ravenn spent countless hours in order to prepare her application for submission. She had help from Ms. Murray, Ms. Chung, Mr. Navas and Ms. Fossett. "It was a great accomplishment that will help me later in life," Ravenn says with a smile on her face. This is surely only the beginning for this great scholar (caption by Olivia Byrd).

MSA PEP RALLY

As our TMMS tigers prepared to defeat the oncoming MSA we got pumped up with a fun filled Pep Rally! The event kicked off with a rousing performance by G-Man, his high-flying stunts and "Stanky leg" contest left the audience excited for more. There was an awesome step show from Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. where our 8th grade administrator Mr. Goins relived his college days. We had a special guest appearance from Jennie Jones, a radio host from 93.9 kiss fm. As a big finally the teachers had an old school dance competition that the students couldn't help but be involved in. All in all, it was definitely an event to remember. PG County Middle Cheerleading Grand Champions

TMMS cheerleaders are now the official grand champions of the sport. Through teamwork and hard training our cheerleaders have achieved their rightful title at the top. Ms. Christian and Ms. Gaujean are the head coaches and they did a awesome job of working with the cheerleaders. Congratulations to Ms. Christian, Ms. Gaujean, and all of our cheerleaders! During the meetings, Board Members will share information on topics of interest and report on school system programs and initiatives. Click here for details.

2nd Qtr Honor Roll Assembly

On Wednesday, February 18th, Thurgood Marshall Middle School had its second quarter honor-roll assembly and it was a huge success. There were dancers, singers, cheerleaders and much more. No one was left out as we celebrated our top students and we also celebrated those students that are "On the Roll" or on their way to getting better grades. Spelling Bee

John Hopking University Trip

The competition was fierce and everyone was nervous. But in the end, Genarra Jones was selected, for the second year, to represent Thrugood Marshall Middle School as our spelling bee champion. Genarra saw her opportunity when Rogelio Ceballos (runner up) misspelled his word; you could see the confidence in her eyes when she spelled the winning word "femininity."   Thurgood Marshall students continued their college bound experience with a visit to John Hopkins Medical University. Our students where greeted by world famous guest speaker "Doctor Ben Carson." He gave a lecture about the latest in medical and scientific technology. His lecture motivated several of our students. This was a great field trip and it gave students another opportunity to plan for their futures.

Thurgood Marshall Winter Concert
The Thurgood Marshall Winter Concert was a great event that was filled with plenty of entertainment like modern dancing and the school band. Take a look at the photographs and a small video clip. (Caption by Student C.Y.)

1st Quarter Honor Roll Assembly

When the "best of the best" celebrate honor roll they do it with style. On November 19th, 2008, Thurgood Marshall Middle School honored its' top students with a great celebration. There was a tiger, alumni, board of education staff, cheerleaders, an inspirational song, elated parents, TMMS staff and over 750 students. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Click the photos on the right and see for yourself. (Photographs by  Dearmus Bell and Peter Bosworth: Caption by Raul Navas).
TMMS Is college bound at VSU
TMMS recently took a trip to Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA to enrich the scholars knowledge of the college experience. The students got a first hand look into the life of a college student, including: a mini step show with Phi Beta Sigma Inc. and lunch with the colligates. We also  enjoyed a thorough tour of the school with college instructors, who gave us some insight on what it takes to get into a good college and how to survive once you make it in. It was truly a eye opening experience for me and I encourage everybody to visit the campus. Go Trojans!!! (Caption by Student Olivia Byrd 11/14/08)

TMMS IS SKATING OUR WAY TO THE TOP

On October 30 2008 TMMS had a skating party to celebrate the importance of education. the skating party was one of the incentives that happens at the end of every month. Teachers and students enjoyed themselves.  TMMS is skating there way  to the top (caption by student Joshua Eley 11/14/08).

Books Come Alive at TMMS

Teachers from TMMS dressed up as characters from books they appreciate, so the students can see that reading can take you to different places. I felt like I was actually seeing, feeling, and believing that I was in the book. Wow, this really helped spark my interest in reading. (Caption by Student J.A. AKA Tattoo 11/13/2008)

Men Matter they truely matter

(Photographs by Lexus Garnett and Dearmus Bell 10/13/2008)
On October 13, over 75 male role models came to Thurgood Marshall Middle School to speak to the young males about the importance of being a good male citizen. Among our quest where elected officials, professional comedians, chefs, police officers and entrepreneurs. Meanwhile, Ms. Fossett spoke with the girls about behaving like proper ladies. Everyone learned through the speeches and stories that were told. There were even individual sessions were students were split up into classroom-sized groups. Important issues such as respect, authority, listening, goals, and education were discussed. It was a successful day for everyone here at TMMS and in the end the message was clear: "Men do make a difference at Thurgood Marshall Middle School . (Caption by Nancy Gutierres 10/14/2008)
