Maryland School Assessment Home Report
Spring 2009 Reading and Math Results
In April 2009 your child took the Maryland School Assessment for reading
and math. This test is required by federal legislation to measure your
child's reading and math achievement against the Maryland Content
Standards. Maryland Content Standards describe what all students should
know and be able to do.
Below are the reading and math scores received by your child. Also shown
are the average scores received by students in your child's grade and
school, the school system, and the entire state. These scores help you
to understand your child's performance relative to established
Proficiency Levels for basic, proficient, and advanced performance.
Short descriptors of the performance expected for each level are noted
below.

Understanding The Results From The Maryland School
Assessment
The Maryland School Assessment measures a child's performance against
the Maryland Content Standards in Reading and Math. The Maryland Content
Standards are available from your school or online at
www.mdk12.org . The Scale Score Chart
shows the reading and math scores received by your child, the average
reading and math scores received by students in your child's grade in
school, the system, and the entire state. Scale scores help you to
understand your child's performance relative to established standards
for basic, proficient, and advanced performance. The percentage of
students in your child's grade who are achieving at each level is also
noted, for your school, the county, and the entire state.
READING PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTORS

Students at this level are unable to adequately read and
comprehend grade appropriate literature and informational
passages. |

Students at this level can read grade appropriate text and
demonstrate the ability to comprehend literature and
informational passages. |
| Advanced |
Students at this level can regularly read above grade-level
text and demonstrate the ability to comprehend complex
literature and informational passages. |
MATHEMATICS PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTORS

Students at this level demonstrate only partial mastery of
the skills and concepts defined in the Maryland Mathematics
Content Standards. |
| Proficient |
Students at this level demonstrate an understanding of
fundamental grade level skills and concepts and can generally
solve entry-level problems in mathematics. |
| Advanced |
Students at this level can regularly solve complex problems
in mathematics and demonstrate superior ability in reason
mathematically. |
