Greetings Parents and Guardians,

The 2006-2007 school year continues to be filled with Academic Progress!  Our students performed extremely well on the Maryland School Assessments.  Because of our outstanding effort, we look forward to no longer being a "School in Improvement".  This could not have been achieved without the support of our ENTIRE Matthew Henson Elementary School Faculty and Students!

As the Instructional Leader, I continue my pledge to develop a school that emphasizes teaching and learning; a school that will provide a loving, safe and orderly environment for all students.  We will present to you a strenuous testing program, whose results will reveal your children's strengths and weaknesses.  This informational data will allow us to differentiate your child's instruction.  Our instructional and supplemental programs address students at every level.  During the school day, selected students engage in the Talented and Gifted Program, Reading First and Early Reading First Initiatives as additional resources provided by Title I.  Once the school day has ended, we offer an Extended Day Program as well as Supplemental Educational Services.  There are also many learning opportunities provided in our school during the summer.

The most important aspect of addressing your child's needs is "YOU".  The successful school boasts a strong Home/School connection - we cannot do it without you.  This is your school, these are your children, thus we need your support.  This can be done in a variety of ways: conduct constant communication with parents;  visit your child's classroom, chaperone field trips, sign up to assist in the classroom or main office; apply to be a recess monitor; participate in parent workshops; and, most importantly, ENGAGE in your child's learning activities!  Ensure that your child completes homework assignments daily, completes school projects and follows the school's Code of Conduct.  

"Together", we can continue to improve Matthew Henson- our test scores, our image, our future.
