The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is a multiple choice assessment measuring skills in reading, mathematics,and writing.These same skills are assessed on the SAT which makes the PSAT a practical experience for those who later plan to sit for the SAT.
The PSAT takes 2 hours and 10 minutes with additional time allowed to complete student information. The test is offerd free of charge to 10th and 11th graders during the school day in the second or third week of October. Juniors who achieved a high score may qualify to be a Merit Scholar.

Most subject tests consist of a combination of multiple choice, free response, and essay questions.Language exams may include a speaking section.
AP exams vary in length but usually take 2-3 hours. Students currently enrolled in AP courses are expected to sit for the exam which is free of charge.Exams are given the first and second weeks of May.Northwestern currently offers 15 Advanced Placement courses.
