College Disciplines and Academic Study

Dear High School Students:

When thinking about colleges and majors, students are looking for the majors that will provide them with optimal learning experiences and many job opportunities. We feel the need to spread the word to your students about the University of Maryland’s prestigious Geography Department.
Geography concerns the relations between people and the natural world, the effects of ecosystems on human beings and vice versa, the choices people make, the effects of past actions on people today, and the effects of today’s choices on future generations.

Geography at the University of Maryland offers a wide array of courses in three main areas: human, physical, and technical. There are two specializations in the Geography major: General Geography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS)/Computer Cartography. GIS is a field of study that is flourishing and we would like to show your students the world of opportunities available within this major. We highly encourage students to look into the up-and-coming field of GIS as a concentration or as a minor.

Many students learn about job opportunities or may be recruited when they attend a career fair. The Geography Advising Office and the Career Center coordinate career fairs every semester and students are advised to come in their business attire, resume-in-hand, and ready to interview. By attending these career fairs many students set up their post-graduation work situations before they even graduate. Students with qualified computer skills may obtain job opportunities that include working for the local governmental and private organizations including NGOs, Urban Planning agencies, Defense Intelligence Companies, or other companies such as Lockheed Martin. In addition, students can take advantage of the career fairs to find internships that correspond with their interests, while earning college credits, and in many circumstances get paid for their work.

By traveling to other countries students will be able to immerse themselves in another setting geographically, and experience cultural diversity. We offer trips to Puerto Rico as well as various places in the Southern Caribbean such as St. Lucia.

Please encourage students to visit www.geog.umd.edu University of Maryland Geography Department to learn more about the Department of Geography including courses they can take and other information. In addition, we are attaching our departmental brochure which we ask you to please pass along to your students. If there are any questions, feel free to contact us by email at Geography Department or telephone at 301-405-4073.

Sincerely,

Ronald W. Luna
