What are Eating Disorders?

Eating disorders are psychological illnesses with biological basis modified and influenced by emotional and culture behaviors that also alter ones eating patterns. Believe it or not, there are a number of eating disorders diagnosed each day, but some are more severe than others. The five most common and severe eating disorders are:

  • Anorexia Nervosa ¢
  • Bulimia Nervosa £
  • Binge Eating {also called closet eaters} ¥
  • Compulsive Overeating €
  • Orthorexia Nervosa {also called health food junkies} §

Did you know that 10% of all young woman are suffering from some kind or eating disorder? Also, 15-60% of overweight individuals suffer from an eating disorder. If you have concerns for a family member of friend, you can to the right site! Since the risks of having an eating disorder are so high, the best way to indentify a disorder is to learn the symptoms. For example, in anorexia people suffer from abnormal blood counts, constant fainting, menstrual irregularities or loss of menstruation, irregular heart rhythms, bone loss low blood pressure, dehydration, and a slim to none chance of pregnancy.

Symptoms for bulimia and any other eating disorder are; abnormal bowel functioning, damaged teeth and gums, sores in throat and mouth (from vomiting), fatigue, sores, scares or calluses on the knuckles and/or hands.
