Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)
50th Annual Maryland State FBLA Competition On March 30th, members of OHHS' Future Business Leaders of America organization embarked on a journey to Hagerstown, Maryland. Here, the 50th Annual Maryland State FBLA competition took place. At this event over 1,000 FBLA members from all regions of Maryland congregated to compete in competitions, participate in a variety of enriching workshops, and network with peers who share the same passion for leadership.
Two of Oxon Hill's FBLA members, President Robyn Burgess and Vice President Haywood L. Perry III competed in the “Emerging Business Issues” event. This competition entailed a five minute presentation on a predetermined topic. This year's topic pertained to Social Security and the effects that privatization would have on its beneficiaries. The catch to this competition is that competitors aren't made aware of whether they will argue as advocates or as opponents to privatization until 10 minutes prior to their presentation.
Well, those 10 minutes served as time enough for Haywood Perry and Robyn Burgess. They passionately argued the perspective that they were given and triumphed over the many other teams that competed. They earned Second Place over all the Maryland based teams. On April 1st, plaques were presented to both students in front of the entire FBLA General Assembly.
