AMERICA'S CHOICE COLLEGE MATH
PREPARATORY
A
SYSTEM OF INTERVENTIONS TO FIT ALL STUDENTS
At
Potomac High School we recognize that not
all struggling students have the same needs. Some require a little
extra help to master the current lessons, while others require
intensive accelerated instruction to get back on track toward a
college-preparatory path or success in the workplace.
As a result we have incorporated a range
of interventions based on America’s Choice 3-level tiers.
TIER-ONE: EXTENDED LEARNING PROGRAM
TIER-TWO: PATHWAYS TO COLLEGE PREP MATHEMATICS
TIER-THREE: RAMP-UP MATHEMATICS
TIER-ONE: EXTENDED LEARNING PROGRAM
Students who occasionally fail to grasp a lesson or who struggle
with some assignments can be kept on grade level with extra time and
support before or after school. The Extend Learning Program is an
before or after school intervention program prior to the October,
January, and May HSA tests.
TIER-TWO: PATHWAYS TO COLLEGE PREP MATHEMATICS
Students who consistently struggle with math have misconceptions, or
flawed understandings, that impede their learning. Pathways to
College Prep Math is a full year course that earns an elective
credit but does not count for one of the required math credits.
This course prepares for the Algebra HSA and introduces Algebra 2
concepts in the second semester. A diagnostic screener test helps
identify which students need this level of extra help. Student
progress is monitored using pre-tests, post-tests, and checkpoints.
Online tutoring is available. Content Enrichment Program (CEP) is an
intervention program offered during the day each semester as a
non-credit bearing intervention.
TIER-THREE: RAMP-UP MATHEMATICS
Students in tier three are far behind grade level and need a
comprehensive curriculum to accelerate their learning and prepare
them for high school mathematics. Ramp-Up Mathematics is a focused,
more intensive conceptual math course for students with more serious
gaps in their understanding of Algebra. Ramp-Up Mathematics covers
math concepts that prepare students for higher-level mathematics and
includes pre-tests, checkpoints, and summative assessments.
