| An average school year
involves puzzling predicaments
and many stressful situations,
as well as good times and memorable moments. And that’s
just for us parents! Our children
come first, and of course, also face dilemmas and
difficulties along with their successes throughout the
year. Where can
you turn for answers when you find yourself or your
child caught with questions? Traditional channels such
as teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators are
always open to communication, but here at Potomac High
School as in all High Schools in Prince Georges County
we offer an additional avenue —the Parent Liaison
program.
Who Is a Parent
Liaison?
A Parent Liaison is a
school staff member who works at
Potomac HS. He/She is
primarily responsible
to help parents get the information and assistance they
need to support their children at home and to ensure
their children’s success in school.
As indicated earlier
the Parent Liaison program exists throughout PG County
Public Schools. The position was created in order to
increase schools’ productive involvement with families
in their communities. A Parent Liaison’s primary
responsibility is to find ways to bridge communication,
cultural, language, and/or experiential gaps that
impeded the home and school working together.
Who Is Potomac
High School’s Parent Liaison?
My name is Yvonne
Payne, and this is my second year as
Potomac High School’s Parent Liaison. I’m very
familiar with Potomac High School and its programs and
am excited to share that
knowledge with other parents!
How Do Parent
Liaisons Help Parents?
Parent Liaisons help
parents and students in many different ways.
-
facilitating communication between parents and
teachers or parents and administrators
-
disseminating information about the school and its
programs
-
meeting with parents to discuss school policies and
procedures as well as the need for conferences or
meetings
-
arranging meetings between parents and school staff
members, including
-
helping parents get involved with their child’s
class and/or the school as a whole .
Overall, the job I do
the most often is listen to parents and help them find
the solutions they seek.
