High School Assessments

The High School Assessments (HSA) are end-of-course tests that reflect a new level of achievement and accountability.  The tests are administered three times a year...January, May, and Summer.  HSAs are the replacement to what was once called the Maryland Functional Test (MFT).  HSAs are administered in the following content areas:

Algebra/Data Analysis  English 10  Biology  |  Government

Please feel free to click on the above links to get further information on an individual test.

Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) requires that every student take the HSAs in order to fulfill their testing requirement for graduation.  Effective for first-time ninth graders in the fall of 2005, passing all of these tests will be required in order to be eligible for a diploma.  Students may meet the state testing requirements by:

  • Passing each of the 4 assessments (algebra/data analysis, biology, English and government).  There are 2 potential substitutions:

    • AP/IB scores
    • Mod-HSA Assessment program

  • Combined-score option

  • Meet requirements through the Bridge Plan for Academic Validation program.
